I tend to have an issue/struggle while writing dialogue. I always feel like I put too many speech tags or not enough. Do you have any tips or suggestions to write dialogue that isn't boring around the speech being said, but also not overwhelming or redundant?

Makes sense! And honestly, this sort of thing is really subjective to the reader and the writer. For me, I don't like a lot of dialogue tags, or when you like... vary them. As a reader, I can tell when you constantly try to make a dialogue tag a different type of action (ie: yelled, hissed, imparted, etc etc). The best advice I ever received was: "Just used said/says". People gloss right over this word and don't even notice it, and it's true. So my go to is to use mostly 'says' and 'replies', and then a different tag when I really need/want to emphasize a tone, or a change in tone.

As far as the speech itself-- I don't think you need to really worry about if it's 'boring' or not? Some character, for example, have a boring cadence. I think the goal for dialogue really should just be... "Is this in character?".

If you're feeling weird about a work, just ask someone to look over it! We're our own worst critics and like 99% of the time there isn't actually anything wrong with it!
