How hard is it to learn drums? And how does one even start? Drumkits look too big and expensive.

Very great question and the answer from me is I’m still learning and I’m not getting very far so most of what I say will be personal experience. And maybe mostly out my ass, sorry. I’ll do my best.

First off I am lucky to have found a place that rents drum rooms in my country, and I did a test run to see if I really wanted to commit to this. Is this interesting enough for me to continue, will I ditch it if I get bored, all these questions answered in a 2 hour rent where I did nothing but bother the others with relentless horrible drumming.

But first,

1) Basic rhythms are relatively easy, think off clapping to the beat, then hitting something with a stick to that beat. 1234, 1234. Then you step on 1 and 3, that’ll be the kick. Right hand 1234,1234. Right leg,
1_3_,1_3_ then you use your left to hit the snare on 3, then you put it all together its really less complicated than I make it sound.

The problem I personally have is my ankle and sense of rhythm one that I had was my non-dominant left kept hitting my right stick, and I cannot separate my foot and hand so I cant do complicated rhythms.

I started with a drum pad and trying to smack it to songs, then when I got the kit I just smacked around however I like. Then I just watched Drummate (youtube) and slowly figured it out. I learned a lot of bad habits because of this so I don’t really recommend it but Idk.

I wanted to learn drums for a long time so I got on carousell, a site that sells secondhand items and I found one that fit my budget (or more like one my mom allowed me to buy) it cost 188 dollars SGD.

I started a part time job and used that money to get it. As for the size I’ll put a photo below. Mine’s an E-kit which is less bulky than traditional drums. Its just in the corner of my living room and I can squeeze it down too.

The thing with buying secondhand is my mom helped me with the moving because it was all the way on the other side of the country, and my country is small so depending where you live, aka anywhere other than this tiny ass island, itll be more difficult for you.

Good luck with everything! Wish I could be more help
