You've told us about Adam, but I'm curious about the Sword of the Saint.
How did it Refrain Almonde get it to obey her?
Or is there something I'm missing, like it got corrupted?
The sword isn't sentient, it just has a precise set of instructions that only pre-refrain Almonde and Mikhail can overwrite. Refrain Almonde still can't use the sword itself to kill a human being mostly out of respect to Mikhail's memory but if she wished she could just coat it in her blood and use the resulting "sheathe" as the blade's edge for lethal blows instead
