How many contributors will this project have?
Including contributors for the expanded digital product, we will have over 60 participants! We are still finalizing things so we can begin discussing contributor pitches, and creator spotlights will begin being showcased on our socials around the end of the month, so we hope you will look forward to them.
Not the previous Stray, but your last post is extremely disappointing. I hope you realize that people's preferences in how much they post do not by any means reflect on their personality, and that you cannot actually know people from their social media presence - or lack of it - alone. Just today I saw someone get harassed out of another project because they prefer to remain anonymous from social media. This is extremely disappointing to say the least.
Thank you for sharing your concerns, anon, but this is how we have chosen to work toward keeping all participants of this project safe and comfortable, and we will not be changing this requirement. Accountability is something that goes both ways, and for the same reasons most people would avoid a zine whose mods were entirely anonymous, we are not willing to just make assumptions as to the acceptability of anyone's online behavior. A relatively active social media account is really the only resume we can ask for, and anyone seeking a reasonable accommodation for not having a significant online presence is always welcome to DM us about it.
Additionally, contributors will not be forced to share any information publicly if they don't want to, nor will they have to have their name or accounts listed in the finished product if they prefer to remain anonymous. Nothing more than a preferred name and age range (since some people wish to not interact with individuals significantly outside their own) is even required to be shared in the project server. This information is strictly for admin use, to try and get a better idea of who we are allowing to be part of the zine.
This is the last response we will be making regarding this specific situation, thank you for your understanding.
Will contributors be compensated for their work at all?
Contributors will receive a full digital copy of the zine bundle for sure. Beyond that, it will depend on how well the project sells in preorders, and we cannot forecast that this early in the process. At the very least, contributors will have the option to purchase physical items at production cost.
Why do we need to have a social media account active with posts “within two weeks”? This is a weird stipulation for a zine, ngl. I have a social media account I check basically every day, but I rarely post anything on it because I prefer to lurk and just quietly like things. Am I disallowed from applying because I don’t like attention online…? You’re scaring off a lot of potential applicants with this arbitrary requirement, tbh.
We know this is a bit stringent, but given the atmosphere of online spaces these days, we felt accountability for one's online behavior was a necessary precaution. Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet has been taken as a carte blanche for some extremely harmful behavior in a lot of fandom circles, and we want to do our best to keep participants safe from harassment or abuse. There is no failsafe method to prevent exposure to this sort of behavior, sadly, but a social media feed is about as good a litmus for someone's ideologies, interests, and interactions with others as we get in this day and age.
We want to assure you that follower count is not taken into consideration in any way when jurying applications, and if some circumstances have prevented you or anyone else from being active on any platform, you are welcome to get in touch with us privately to discuss the situation. We are definitely willing to be flexible, we are just trying to make sure everyone involved in the zine feels comfortable and safe in the space we will be working in.
I'm absolutely giving myself away here but does Guoba count as an animal in the context of the zine? 😂
Sorry for the delay, head mod is moving and has packed her brain in a box somewhere, we're still looking for it.
Guoba absolutely counts as an animal for this project! Human-looking characters, i.e. Yae Miko, Tighnari, Kirara, Diona, etc. are considered people despite having animal features, but any creature that isn't Basically Human will count as an animal for the purposes of this zine, even if they're more sentient characters than the standard wildlife critters.
Hi mods! I'm interested in applying for flash fiction. I have one sample which I am unsure should be replaced or not, however. On the GForm, it states that no excerpts or chapters are allowed. My sample is technically a "chapter" for a story—it is a standalone letter to a different character basically summarizing the events told in prose, which can be read completely standalone (i.e. without the prose chapter). Is something like this acceptable, or should it be replaced? Thank you!
Sorry for the delayed reply! We wish retrospring sent email notifications of questions!!
Given the nature of what a flash fiction contribution would entail, we're looking for works that can stand on their own without the chapters around them, so in most cases a chapter from a larger work would be discouraged, but we are aware that there are exceptions to just about anything one might think of. If you feel the chapter is self-enclosed enough to stand apart from the rest of the larger piece, you may submit it as it is. Just please be aware that it will be evaluated entirely on its own without the context of any other chapters.
How will money be handled for this zine? How much transparency will there be? Will we be shown a confirmation of the funds going towards the shelter at the end?
Thank you for your question, we definitely understand there is a lot of uncertainty given the number of recent incidents regarding zine financing. Our head and finance mod Kari has over 10 years of experience in managing finances, production, and distribution both in a professional and fandom setting, including two zines which have been successfully completed and fulfilled within the past three years. You can find information on Kari's mod experience here: https://zinelist.carrd.co/
We will be as transparent as feasibly possible throughout the production and shipping process. This of course does include sharing a confirmation of funds donated should sales income exceed what is required to complete production and shipping.
Can we only draw animals that already exist on teyvat if we got into the zine?
Any animals that could reasonably be found within the canon universe will be accepted as submissions from contributors. We've never seen any horses in-game, but we know they exist, for example. Animal creatures specifically from other IPs or franchises that only exist within those IPs or franchises, such as pokemon or moogles, will not be accepted, but any animal that logically can exist in Teyvat is perfectly fine.
Very cute zine idea! Do you have a goal $ amount to raise for HEART?
Hello, thank you so much for your interest! We'll be delighted to raise any money for HEART, honestly, but to give you an idea of the financial strain of caring for as many animals as they do, a recent study conducted by PetFoodIndustry.com shows that Japan is the most expensive country in the world in which to keep a pet. The average cost of feeding ONE dog for a year in Japan is estimated at over $2,000. We know that's kind of a big goal, but raising enough money to make a donation that would remove the burden of feeding even just one dog for the next twelve months would be an incredible win.
