character design tips?
I've been itching to talk about this one.
It's okay to make trans characters visibly transgender. I don't only mean top surgery scars or a trans sticker, I mean breasts, 5 o' clock shadows, ETC. A lot of trans people don't/can't pass, denying that reality is denying who we are. When you're designing trans characters you have to design two levels of them: What they were before and what they are now. Leave male sexual dimorphism in trans-women; give them wide shoulders, big hands, strong brow-bones, ETC.
There's nothing wrong with designing a perfectly-passing trans person, just remember that this image is unattainable for almost all trans people.
I feel like a lot of discussion about transgender people has become reactionary. Conservatives start with the "we can always tell" bullshit and then people, without realizing the consequences, start ONLY using images of people who were able to transition before puberty, with extensive surgeries, ETC. When the only picture of trans people you push is the "ideal" version you are doing almost just as much damage as the people you're fighting against. A lot of trans people are very obviously and clearly trans; no one is questioning my AGAB, it's extremely obvious that I was assigned male at birth, and there's literally nothing wrong with acknowledging that as long as it isn't being used in a way to insult/degrade me.
