Why do I feel like that boy would be the type of person you see in math book problems.
"John buys 200 watermelons...." Stuff like that.
I think schools are designed to suck all of the fun out of every topic they cover. When I've gotten autistic about math-related things, it was thanks to YouTube channels like Stand-up Maths and Numberphile, which actually try to make it entertaining.
You also can't force special interests to happen. They have to grow organically.
