A quick question about the writer application! The guidelines state that each piece in our portfolio must be below 2k words, with at least one standalone short story. Does this mean that our portfolio pieces can be excerpted from longer fics (as long as the excerpt is below 2k) with at least one being a full finished fic, or do you mean you'd like the entries to be full stories with at least one being an ORIGINAL (non-fanfic) piece? I hope this question makes sense!
Hello! It seems you're talking about your samples, instead of your portfolio. The three compulsory samples must be below 2k words with at least one standalone story, but this requirement does not apply to your portfolio. A portfolio isn't required, and whichever piece you put in there, how many, etc is up to you! The purpose of a portfolio is for you to insert your works in case you feel that the three samples aren't sufficient to show off your work.
As for your question on samples, it is the former. You can have excerpts as long as one piece is a full finished fic. The content of the writing being original or fanwork is also up to you, but if you're interested in submitting other types of works such as poems, letters, etc, please submit at least one example of what you intend to write.
