Hello! For merch artists, would it be possible to sell the merch we made after the project concludes? If so, would it be possible to pay the team to order extra product?
Hello! Yes, it's possible to sell the merch you made after the project concludes, and it would be possible to pay to order extra product. You can contact our finance mod for the specifics later.
Hello! Which charity will the money from the sale of the zine go to?
Hello! The final charity will be decided by our contributors, who will be voting from a list of charities shortlisted by the mod team. In line with the themes in Mononoke, the shortlisted charities are related to helping women, medical aid, or both. The final charity will be announced sometime during our creation period!
Hello, is it okay if I ask how many applications have been made, so far?
Hello! At the point of answering this question, we've received 117 applications! (Please see the previous answer as well!)
How many applications have you received so far?
Hello! At the point of answering this question, we've received 117 applications!
Heya! Has the 30-35 contributor estimate shifted based on the volume of applications coming in? Also, is there a more definitive headcount for each contributor type (i.e. 20 artists, 5 merch artists, etc.)?
Hello! Based on the applications we've received so far, we are on track to invite between 30-35 contributors by application (though this is still subject to change). As for the definitive headcount, we are unable to confirm this until the end of the grading period, as we would like to take all circumstances into consideration before deciding on the final numbers. We hope that answers your question!
Hello Tokihanatsu Team! In the merch application under the items we would be interested in making there is "Printed pin (metal)" do you have examples of what you mean by this?
Hello! We don't have any examples on hand unfortunately, but it's a metal-based pin, with the design printed onto the metal. If you'd like any further clarifications, do feel free to reach out to us via DMs, thank you!
Hello! Are the contributor applications sent to the zine email? I just wanted to make sure I sent it to the right place. Thank you!

A quick question about the writer application! The guidelines state that each piece in our portfolio must be below 2k words, with at least one standalone short story. Does this mean that our portfolio pieces can be excerpted from longer fics (as long as the excerpt is below 2k) with at least one being a full finished fic, or do you mean you'd like the entries to be full stories with at least one being an ORIGINAL (non-fanfic) piece? I hope this question makes sense!
Hello! It seems you're talking about your samples, instead of your portfolio. The three compulsory samples must be below 2k words with at least one standalone story, but this requirement does not apply to your portfolio. A portfolio isn't required, and whichever piece you put in there, how many, etc is up to you! The purpose of a portfolio is for you to insert your works in case you feel that the three samples aren't sufficient to show off your work.
As for your question on samples, it is the former. You can have excerpts as long as one piece is a full finished fic. The content of the writing being original or fanwork is also up to you, but if you're interested in submitting other types of works such as poems, letters, etc, please submit at least one example of what you intend to write. We hope that answers your question!
Hi there! I wanted to inquire about how artist's works are looked at? Once submitted, are they only looked at once? Or are they looked at throughout the application phase? I'm trying to figure out if submitting now and adding to the extended portfolio during the application phase is better (or allowed), or waiting until I've completely decided on what pieces to submit. Thank you in advance!
Hello! Artist applications are being preliminarily graded as they come in, and they will all be vetted through again after applications close. As such, submitting your application earlier or later will not put you at any disadvantage to other applicants. Regardless, extended portfolios are highly appreciated, so we do encourage you to submit those!
Some fanzines allow contributors to purchase the zine in bulk out of pocket (typically at the zine's unit cost + shipping) to sell at artist alley and their own online shopfronts. Given Tokihanatsu is a charity zine, what is its resale policy?
Hello! There will be no bulk sales and no sales for profit at all outside of the zine's initial run to raise money for our chosen charity (TBA). However, contributors may purchase a few extra copies at cost for personal use only. We hope that answers your question!
hi :) for page/spot artist contributors, is mononoke art absolutely required for sample submissions or can other forms of ghibli art be included in the submissions as well? also, would we still be considered for the artist position if our portfolio contains mostly detailed illustrations that are not mononoke or ghibli related? I love this series despite me not drawing them much haha ; v ;
Hello! This zine is not for the Studio Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke, it's for the 2007 anime Mononoke by Nakamura Kenji. That said, we do welcome portfolios without works from Mononoke. Thank you!
Hey, I noticed in the social media posts that the zine doesn’t have a dedicated tag yet- #tokihanatsu2024 for example. Will one be implemented at later stages of this project?
Hello, thank you for the question! We currently do not have any plans for the zine itself to have a dedicated tag.
Genuine question: How is the zine supposed to be 16+, when the source material is rated mature (17+ in the USA)? What makes Mononoke unique is how it portrays and comments on the horrors humans are capable of committing. But contributions to the zine won't be allowed to reference the stories & themes of the source material? Or am I misunderstanding something?
Thank you for the question! You are correct that the zine is rated lower than the original anime in the USA, but that does not mean that we are not allowing references to the stories. We are allowing and highly encourage contributors to raise these themes. The zine's rating was set below 17+ as we wanted to make it accessible for more fans, and because other territories have set the rating lower, such as 15+ for Australia and 13+ for Japan. We were concerned that setting it higher might give the impression that we are allowing mature content that goes beyond canon. Additionally, as the zine is shipping from Australia, we decided that a lower rating reflecting the rating in Australia would be more suitable for the zine.
If you are comfortable disclosing, what sorts of criteria do you consider when selecting participants amongst the zine applicants?
Hello! The rough judging criteria is as follows:
Art: Illustrative works; detail-oriented, composition, colors, patterns, etc., with a focus on unique and unconventional styles.
Merch: Colours, composition and if the style fits merch items, particularly Mononoke-themed merch.
Writing: Characterization, plot, syntax, prose, and writing style.
Alternative content creators: Quality of work, suitability of the work for the zine. There is no specific grading criteria for this category of creators due to the wide variety of works we will be allowing applications for.
We hope that answers your question!
Prior to the application going live, will specific types of content (i.e. illustrations, fics, merch) be decided upon and announced?
Hello! The general categories of content we will be accepting can be found in the application guidelines in our info doc and carrd!
Specifically, we're looking for artists (both page and spot), merch artists (both digital and physical), writers (fanfics, essays, poems, epistolary writing, etc.), and alternative content creators (cosplay, music, recipes, etc.). We hope that answers your question!
