Tokihanatsu: A Mononoke Zine. This is a non-profit, for-charity, gen zine based on the 2007 anime Mononoke by Nakamura Kenji.

hi :) for page/spot artist contributors, is mononoke art absolutely required for sample submissions or can other forms of ghibli art be included in the submissions as well? also, would we still be considered for the artist position if our portfolio contains mostly detailed illustrations that are not mononoke or ghibli related? I love this series despite me not drawing them much haha ; v ;
Hello! This zine is not for the Studio Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke, it's for the 2007 anime Mononoke by Nakamura Kenji. That said, we do welcome portfolios without works from Mononoke. Thank you!
Hey, I noticed in the social media posts that the zine doesn’t have a dedicated tag yet- #tokihanatsu2024 for example. Will one be implemented at later stages of this project?
Hello, thank you for the question! We currently do not have any plans for the zine itself to have a dedicated tag.
Genuine question: How is the zine supposed to be 16+, when the source material is rated mature (17+ in the USA)? What makes Mononoke unique is how it portrays and comments on the horrors humans are capable of committing. But contributions to the zine won't be allowed to reference the stories & themes of the source material? Or am I misunderstanding something?
Thank you for the question! You are correct that the zine is rated lower than the original anime in the USA, but that does not mean that we are not allowing references to the stories. We are allowing and highly encourage contributors to raise these themes. The zine's rating was set below 17+ as we wanted to make it accessible for more fans, and because other territories have set the rating lower, such as 15+ for Australia and 13+ for Japan. We were concerned that setting it higher might give the impression that we are allowing mature content that goes beyond canon. Additionally, as the zine is shipping from Australia, we decided that a lower rating reflecting the rating in Australia would be more suitable for the zine.
If you are comfortable disclosing, what sorts of criteria do you consider when selecting participants amongst the zine applicants?
Hello! The rough judging criteria is as follows:
Art: Illustrative works; detail-oriented, composition, colors, patterns, etc., with a focus on unique and unconventional styles.
Merch: Colours, composition and if the style fits merch items, particularly Mononoke-themed merch.
Writing: Characterization, plot, syntax, prose, and writing style.
Alternative content creators: Quality of work, suitability of the work for the zine. There is no specific grading criteria for this category of creators due to the wide variety of works we will be allowing applications for.
We hope that answers your question!
Prior to the application going live, will specific types of content (i.e. illustrations, fics, merch) be decided upon and announced?
Hello! The general categories of content we will be accepting can be found in the application guidelines in our info doc and carrd!
Specifically, we're looking for artists (both page and spot), merch artists (both digital and physical), writers (fanfics, essays, poems, epistolary writing, etc.), and alternative content creators (cosplay, music, recipes, etc.). We hope that answers your question!
Hello! If you accept cosplayers, what will the policy for works involving them? Do you want exclusive photoshoots or just photos from existing shoots, or something else? How abstract/"canon" do these shoots need to be, if so? Thank you!
Hello! As all content made for the zine has to be brand new, photos from existing shoots are not allowed (existing shoots can, however, form part of your application portfolio). At the very least, if there is an existing costume, a brand new photoshoot has to be done, with the theme and specs to be discussed with the mod team should the cosplayer be accepted. As for how abstract or canon the shoots have to be, it really depends on what the idea is, but a good line of reference is whether it fits in with official art and material that has been released. We hope that answers your question!
Heya! The Zashikiwarashi stage play has a lot of new lore, iconic visuals, and characters! It will likely remain a Japan-only thing (as opposed to the movie, which has a better chance of worldwide distribution), will the spoiler embargo also apply to it?
Hello! The short answer is no, we will not be enforcing a hard ban on stage play spoilers, and content from the play may still be allowed on a case-by-case basis.
The long answer: Our main concerns with spoilers from the stage plays are (1) to ensure that people who have not seen it can get a chance to watch it (e.g. from the blu-rays), and (2) that readers and creators can connect with the content in the zine. As you've rightly raised, the stage plays (both Zashikiwarashi and Bakeneko) will be Japan/Japanese-only, and most of the west is unlikely to have access to their content in English, which could very well make spoilers a moot point. Nonetheless, as we want to keep to keep the zine's content accessible for other fans who have not had a chance to catch the play, we would not encourage spoilers from the stage play. However, this is not a hard ban on stage play spoilers, and whether a pitch containing stage play spoilers will be approved ultimately depends on what is being pitched, and whether the mod team feels that it will be suitable content for the zine.
We hope that answers your question!
Is the fanzine for profit, for charity, or just intend to break even with production costs?
Hello! As we've stated in the interest check and info doc, the zine will not be for profit. The zine will be for-charity, though the charity will only be determined after the interest check closes. Thank you!
Since the zine is being promoted to Japanese speakers, will fics also be translated to Japanese for accessibility? If so, will writers have double the page space to accommodate for those translations?
Hello! Though the zine is currently being promoted to Japanese speakers, whether there will be a Japanese translation depends on the reception by Japanese speakers. If there is insufficient reception for the zine from the Japanese audience, the zine's future promotion will continue only in English.
Hi! Piggybacking off of the cover page question - will the designer for cover page illustration and the title logo design going to be separate people?
Hello! We are unable to give a definitive answer at this point, but the final decision on the logo and layout of the zine will be by the mod team. However, the cover artist can give input regarding the logo design and placement.
Does the project already have a designated cover art illustrator or will they be selected amongst the participants?
Hello! We will be inviting a guest cover artist. There may be other guest artists and writers invited as well, subject to the availability of the invited guests.
During the creation period, will there be regular check-ins built into the schedule to ensure progress is being made on the respective zine submissions?
Hello! Yes, we will be having regular check-ins during the creation period. Creators will have to show progress being made at each check-in.
To prevent having multiple pieces with similar subject matters, can applicants be asked to submit multiple proposals for the mods to choose from?
Hello! Yes, after acceptance, there will be a pitching process for contributors to submit their ideas to the mod team to choose.
Couple of questions regarding artists collaborating with a writer.
1) Is there a set image size for the spot illustration?
2) Will the writer need to sacrifice word count to make room for the illustration?
3) Is there a page limit the writer needs to adhere to?
4) The artist can't start drawing until the writer writes the story, which gives them less time to complete their contribution. How will this be mitigated?
5) Will the artist and writer have a say in how their writing and art are formatted?
Hello! Please see our answers below:
1), 2) and 3) For collaborations, there is no set image size for illustrations and no hard page limit for writers. Writers are also not required to “sacrifice” their word count for the illustrations. However, all this is bearing in mind that out of fairness for other creators on the zine, we have to keep the page count for collaborating writers and spot artists reasonable. The mod team will work together with collaborating writers and spot artists to keep the scale of the deliverables in check.
4) The exact mechanics for collaborations are still being worked out, so we are unable to give an exact answer at this time. Though the timeline for spot artists will indeed be slightly shorter compared to page artists, collaborating writers and spot artists will be following a modified schedule that will give them ample time to finish their pieces.
5) Yes, they do have a say in formatting, and are encouraged to share their ideas with the team, but the final decision will be made by the formatting mod.
We hope that answers your questions!
Do you have a maximum page count in mind for the fanzine?
Hello! Yes we do, but we are unable to give an exact figure at this point in time, as the exact number is dependent on interest check results and contributor applications.
