how do they end up normal by the next time we see then, do they gradually deflate, or is it like popping that doesn't hurt?
it's strange to me how they could be the size of a building in one render then the literal next which happens (probably) not that soon after, they're back to normal.

Usually it's gradual deflation that takes anywhere from an hour or so at smaller amounts to a day or two at very large sizes. The larger they are, the quicker the rate of deflation since there's more surface area for gasses to escape.
