How bad do you think the next Trump term is gonna be now that we have seen his inauguration and his first day of executive orders? Do you think with the current state of the left that bringing back the dirtbag left and left wing populism is a good way to counter the current right wing populism? How can the left start winning the culture war again with a lot of Gen Z shifting right?
Also how do you deal with the idiots who are trying to gaslight people into believing that Elon's nazi salute was a Bellamy salute or an autistic spasm?
It's too early to make an assessment. I have a feeling that this term might be more disjointed than people realize, but it's hard to extract anything meaningful in the 'white noise' of political news.
Honestly, I mentally block out any sort of news about right-wing populism's alleged rise. There's really no point in mulling over demoralizing garbage that gets overblown by reactionaries who act like politics are a team sport. That said, I still have a soft spot for the 'dirtbag left' and have optimism that people change for the better as they get older. A lot of young people just lack the foresight.
For the last question, there is the 'duck test' or 'call a spade a spade', but I really don't like to give the middle-aged egosurfer attention. Hell, I don't think people on that side of the aisle even likes him because he makes their ideology look even more pathetic, on top of the recent H-1B controversy.
Hey, you seem pretty cool. How do I become as cool as you?
Live in a cold climate.
This is only tangentailly related to imageboards, but do you by any chance know anything about history of japanese peer-to-peer networks or where to find some reading material in japanese (excluding the /download/ board of course)? Although I realize Japanese people are not very eager to speak about such things under their current copyright situation which pains me greatly as too many files shared back in the day are either completely gone or just sitting there on some old hard drive never to be shared again.
I've been a long time user of these since 2008 but I'm interested in the WinMX era which I completely missed.
No, sorry, that's outside of my scope. The best that I can do is point you to the WinMX and file-sharing software articles on Niconico, then try to dig from there.
What were your thoughts on the TOHO CLOCK project while it was still up?
Not to mention, but the Chinese version of tohoclock is down as well, which makes me wonder if you would be interested if someone bothered to make a modernized version of the same project.
It was a neat little project! When I was younger, it felt like you were getting these brief glimpses of everyday life in Gensōkyō, and the collection of short arranges were usually so calming or trance-like to listen to that you could imagine that plenty of other people would leave it up as background noise.
There is definitely an interest in bringing the project back. I'm just worried that it might not get enough participants, or that the community is too fractured to get anything done.
Why is your web-sight down ? 🧐
It's still up on my end. The host occasionally has issues, give it a day or so.
Do you get along with your family?
Eh. It's alright. I don't like feeding armchair internet psychologists for free though. 🫰
What are your thoughts on the election? Did you expect a Trump win? Did you think the polling was off? What do you think was the biggest factor in Harris's defeat? Inflation, association with the Biden administration, Gaza, immigration, young conservative men, identity politics, Hispanic conservatives, something else? What do you think the Democratic Party's new platform should be? Stop trying to reach Trump voters and instead focus on energizing their base and appeal to the economic left? Less focus on LGBT issues and more focus on young men and Hispanics? Do you think another Trump presidency will actually be as bad as people are saying it will be? Sorry for asking a lot of questions but you usually have a pretty reasonable views on these things and I want to know what you think.
I was predicting another 'electoral college' situation, then it became 10pm EST and, man, you just knew it was dead on arrival. It didn't even have the dignity to be drawn out until 3am or 10am EST.
Personally, the Harris campaign failed because of their refusal to separate themselves from Biden at a time where people clearly want something different. Her biggest gaffe, that I honestly thought sealed her fate, was her saying "I'm speaking" to the Gaza protesters at the DTW airport. This airport isn't that far from Dearborn, a city with a large Middle Eastern population, like, this was NOT the time and place to pull this shit. Sure, it was a 'girlboss' moment, but it just tells you that she was never serious.
You cannot base your campaign on "being the reasonable candidate that will unite this divided country", then fail the first step by refusing to listen to people. That's not how that works. Why go on the campaign trail if you refuse to compromise and don't have the courtesy to lie?
The campaign was so bad that Harris yard signs didn't pop up until the last possible month, while Trump yard signs had been up for months now, even after his comments on Detroit. They had billboards and commercials, sure, but the words in the sky are NOT the words on the ground, and I'm really not sure what 'pandering to moderates' and 'telling people that they're broke' was meant to achieve.
As for the Democratic Party, ideally, they should really appeal to the left and working class more, but the issue is that they would never let this happen because they're so plagued by lobbyist-funded moderates, you'd probably find them stuck in internal gridlock before they would allow anything of substance to pass.
I don't have any concrete thoughts on Trump's return, but it's obviously not an ideal scenario in the long term. I'd normally criticize fearmongering in election cycles, but considering the somber mood, it feels inappropriate to dismiss this as an overreaction because poorly thought-out policies will get people killed. I also have questions about the economy, foreign policy, and 'how far' they'll go in two years.
All things considered, being right sucks.
wew You've basically wrote THE book on early imageboard history. I used to hang out with a crew of wannabe IB historians, Bibliotheca Anonoma. It was my dream to write something like this in the 2010s but I was clueless as to how, most of what we knew was hearsay, couldn't even imagine wayback was that useful and translation services weren't anywhere near good.
Seeing someone take the job into a state that may be regarded as complete has made me genuinely happy. Thanks.
No problem. It still feels weird to be a source on the subject matter, like, I feel like that's not a thing that you should be known for, but it is what it is.
When Retrospring shuts down will you open a new account on a different Q&A site? It's pretty nice to have an easy way to ask you questions and see what other people are asking you.
Also if you every want to accept donations but are worried about your personal information leaking you could set up a monero wallet since that is a very privacy friendly cryptocurrency.
Yeah, I plan to get around to it eventually. I already have a viable alternative in my line of sight, but I'm waiting for the platform to flesh itself out more before I make anything official. There's also this cute phenomenon where people that normally wouldn't say anything will if they believe that it might be the last words they ever get to say, so I'm not in any rush to move right away.
I have considered the idea of quietly dropping a Monero wallet address somewhere, but I've also learned that I'm not exactly the fastest adopter of new technology.
kind of pointless to have a retrospring if you're not going to actually answer anything, yeah?
I mean, you can't expect me to give out too much information on where I hang out. I have some level of foresight to understand what happens if I acknowledge a community's existence, which is why I'm a bit hesitant to acknowledge communities that are comfy but small, and I can't just drop a Discord link out in the open without careful consideration about what that entails.
why are you so angry all the time?
I never subscribed to the idea of inferring emotion from typing styles. I'd honestly love to type with a formal syntax, but people apparently view punctuation usage as aggressive, and lowercase syntax somehow became the casual syntax. Then again, I admit that I don't type this formal with friends, only when I'm talking to strangers, being professional or serious, or for humorous effect.
If I were to suddenly change this now, people would try to apply 'that system' here and I don't want to make things easy for people who read posts this way, but here I am, showing my hand.
But I'm a human.
Congratulations, you have been spirited away.
sorry for the vagueness, i was thinking of tools like NirSoft's hashmyfiles or voidtools Everything. general conveniences that can be neat to have around but the average user might not know exist! i'm curious if there's anything more like that out there.
good answers though, overall. things are complicated nowadays, but the best way to spend time is by having fun, after all. "enjoy life and JUMP in the air", as a obscure reference would put it. i think people really gotta encourage eachother to persevere.
Ahh, I see now. This is mostly going to be a list of tools for Windows, but here goes:
- Icaros - Helps generate media thumbnails for lesser known file formats. Must activate first.
- WizTree - Helps identify large files, folders, and duplicate files.
- WinCDEmu - Useful for mounting and creating ISO files, especially with optical drives being phased out.
- Macrium Reflect (Trialware) - Create backups. Clone your drive.
I presume that 7-Zip is common knowledge by now, but it does have a right-click context menu option to look up file hashes as well, though it probably isn't as fast as HashMyFiles.
And yeah, it'd be great if people would be a bit more positive overall. Being around perpetual downers just gets tiresome, even if I do find myself guilty of this sometimes.
Where do you see humanity in the next 10 years?
With the current direction of things, perhaps factionalized and irritable.
I don't like this answer myself, but it's a bit hard to envision any long-term positives.
aw darn, retrospring's shutting down? anyways, uh, hi, stumbled upon the wiki randomly and i think i found a pretty cool little corner of the internet here. hope you're having a nice day!
uhhh in terms of questions... any useful obscure-ish tools/software you think are neat and others might find useful too? and also just any random thoughts on the current rather chaotic state of the world?
from one random internet fella to another, enjoy life and do good :)
This question is a bit too vague, I'm honestly not sure what tools you're thinking of.
As for the current state of the world, I've been going back-and-forth between a resigned "it is what it is" to an inquisitive "let's see how it plays out" with how things are currently going.
Stay safe. Treat each other with respect. Go for your dreams.
