I would like to ask what the guidelines are for applications and how the samples are being graded so that I can best tailor my application samples. I did not find this in the information document. Thank you.
Hello and thank you for your question! Here's what we're scoring for on each app:
Artist Apps: Completed illustrations will be evaluated for technical skill, composition, detail and completion (completed backgrounds, fully rendered within your art style, etc.). They'll also be evaluated for how clearly they communicate their concept.
Writer Apps: Given that the writing for this project will be mostly non-standard, we're scoring mostly for a general control of language. Complete sentences, correct use of punctuation, coherent flow of ideas, etc. If your sample(s) contain a narrative element, we'll also be evaluating your ability to craft and complete that narrative in a finite amount of space. Your score will not be affected by regional conventions (e.g. dialogue marks, spelling differences, etc.).
Merch Apps: We're looking for completed merch or theoretical mockup designs, and scoring for anticipated audience appeal, stylistic fit, technical ability.
Chef Apps: For chef apps, we're looking for interesting and fun recipes demonstrating an understanding of safety, including but not limited to food handling and proper usage of any required equipment.
Cosplay Apps: Cosplay apps will be scored for high quality costuming, appropriate backgrounds/settings, and makeup (if applicable).
General practice for our apps are to submit samples most similar to what you intend to create for the zine, so that the mods can evaluate with the most accurate idea of what you're capable of in mind. PJO-specific work is a plus, but not a must. Outside of that, we'd like to see your best and most representative work! We'd much rather see a non-PJO work that you feel confident in than a PJO piece that you don't believe will reflect your current skill level.
