I’d be the woman in the gas station where they stop to fill up and buy beer and snacks en route to the house. As I’m ringing up their stuff I’d be, “You young folks stayin’ up at the old McKenzie place?” And as they nod, piling six packs and multiple bags of chips into brown paper sacks I’d casually slip in, “Y’all know Old Man McKenzie went plain mad up there one night? Must be six years ago now... butchered the whole family with nuthin’ but some barbeecue tongs and an ice bucket? Yup... wore their faces for a whole month before anyone found ‘em.” As their looks change from bewilderment to amusement, I’d add, “... never did catch ‘im.” And as they’re sidling towards the door. “Young Miss Trudy - up at the ventriloquist dummy museum - swears she can hear him playin’ I Only Have Eyes For You of a night time...” Handing them their change: “Did I tell ya they never found any of their eyes? Yep! Twelve souls dead and not an eye between ‘em... The darnest thing... Enjoy your trip, kids!”
