There it was again, fainter now, toned down by the harsh weather, but still audible enough for Megumi to catch if he strained his ears. He had first heard the wails earlier that evening from his kitchen window. He hadn’t fully opened the window before they stopped, just barely managing to catch a glimpse of something black and white before they scampered away.He had left the doors open in case the creatures wished to return, but was forced to shut them when the rain began.

He should have brought them inside right then,he thinks,looking regretfully outside at the pitch darkness,trying to locate them inbetween the merciless pour.

He throws on his raincoat, grabbing an extra pair and an umbrella,the rain shooting down on his face like arrows the moment he opens the door.
Goddamn, is there going to be a storm out there?!

Megumi hurried onwards,sloshing through the puddles,light from some of the building's rooms paving his way,helping him to follow the mewls,peering under cars and into every nook.

"pspspspspspspspspsps!!" He called,voice barely audible to his own ears over the roar of the storm,either their cires stopped or were forced to drown by the rain,his heart begun racing,water dripped from his raincoat, and the wind whipped at his face,desperation gnawed at him as he moved from spot to spot,his calls growing more frantic.

Suddenly,a faint meow pierced the chaos. Megumi froze, listening,to pinpoint the sound. Another meow, louder this time, came from behind some trash bins near the side of the his building. He rushed over, and there they were—huddled together,contained within a green cardboard package,black and white fur drenched and shivering, they were almost too small to see,hardly four months,their wide eyes were glimmering up at megumi,one pair aquamarine and the other amethyst.

What Peculiar eye colors, megumi crouched down,leaning forward,positioning the umbrella to shelter them entirely,the black one grew still at the action,alert to the change,amethyst irises narrowed,tracking megumi's every movement,indifferent to the white one,crying in distress,misty blue eyes staring mournfully at him.

Megumi slowly extended a hand forth,waiting, nearly begging,right away,the white one eagerly eased closer,rubbing himself on the human's palm,his companion still kept eyeing him warily,frim in it's defensive stance.

"Come on now please? the rain is only going to become harsher,you are free to go in the morning when the weather clears out." He gently tried to coax,doing his utmost to appease the creature,who had begun taking slow, cautious steps in his direction,at last pausing to sniff his hand,nuzzling hesitantly alongside his partner.

Megumi didn't waste time,scooping them up with urgency,after creating a makeshift cave over them with the extra raincoat, securing them under his umbrella for good measure before dashing ahead.

Entering his apartment, he laid them gently on the floor,ridding of his raincoat first, he immediately got rid of the wet package,taking them inside,the kittens pressing closer to his chest,trying to soak in every bit of warmth they could receive from Megumi,he quickly and carefully dried their damp fur with an towel,whispering soothing words as they looked up at him with wide, trusting eyes.

He decided to arrange a comfortable place for them, making a cozy nest of soft blankets in a corner of his room,placing them inside it assuredly, he watched as the black one moved around, before settling and giving a content and grateful purr towards him,megumi sighed in relief before smiling and patting the soft dark fur, the fact that the other one was still clinging desperately in his arm completely slipped his mind,till he heard a drawn-out meow and a light paw nudging his jaw.

"Oh sorry about that, here" Megumi gave him a pat as well,chuckling as the small fur ball appeared to be buzzing with the vibrations of his purrs,he used his other hand to pat the other one too,as purple eyes had begin looking at them disapprovingly,after a minute he figured heading off to warm some milk,attempting to stand but having to pause,when white paws started digging on the sleeves of his shirt,both blues and purples meeting his gaze wistfully.

Megumi cooed,brimming with warmth and rubbing each of their ears,"I'm not going anywhere, just bringing you something to eat."

He patted their heads some more reassuringly, before getting up, the white one seemed dead set on refusing to let him go but complied anyway,megumi made sure to be fast,not wanting them to feel any more anxious.

After watching them eat and fall asleep on top of one another,did megumi finally move from his postion,changing his semi-wet clothes and cleaning whatever mess was left in his hurry,and with a last look at the sleeping kittens,megumi stretched down in his bed,the steady sound of the rain lulling him to a slumber.

In the quiet of the early morning,megumi stirred,something soft was tickling his nose,he felt
unexpected warmth on top of him and one on side of him. Slowly, he opened his eyes to find his vision covered in pure white,tilting his head in sleepy confusion,Megumi blinked rapidly at the small body of a 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 on top of him,and 𝘈𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 with longer darker hair snuggled up beside him,both breathing softly in their sleep.

If he hadn't been in panic mode,megumi could have noted the boys having the same black and white streaks in their hair as the cats he ended up bringing home last night.
