I remember you advocating to buy VN lest the industry dies but seeing this - https://x.com/brutaka3/status/1890402595576983594
How can one justify paying money for this? Don't think it's the customers' fault if they don't want to buy stuff that's been cut like this
When I first saw it I thought people were making a fuss about an all ages version being released (there are some people who think going all ages at all is a betrayal), but yeah, there are very extreme cuts.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to buy everything that's put out. But let's be real, piracy is extremely rampant in VNs and the English publishing scene (which this release of Kanon is afaik not involved in) is small enough that it does a lot of damage. Now I get why people pirate, and let's be real, everyone pirated or pirate something, be it because of high costs or financial trouble or even just ease of access. But you need to make a distinction between boycotting a big AAA company making millions and boycotting a small publisher that hardly breaks even on a good day. And cases as dire as Kanon here are far from the norm. We're at a point where you have probably dozens of releases across the board yearly and most of them are fine, but people still make blanket statements about how all localizers need to die, even though I'm pretty sure for the majority of them they'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong or egregious enough to bring up. It just becomes virtue signaling and screaming into the echo chamber.
Be critical of what you're getting and ignore releases that offend you, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. People say the wildest things at the drop of a hat.
But yeah, otherwise I agree this release of Kanon goes too far.
