Have you heard about Ryukishi's new game, Gerokasu? If you did, what are your thoughts on it?
This may have already been asked/answered, but do you find any failings of Higurashi or do you prescribe most of it to the time in which it was written? (i.e. the weird/inappropriate gags wrt minors/young girls in particular, etc.)
Do you have a particular viewing order for Higurashi that includes the bonus arcs? Like whenever you re-play it, do you have a preferential order you default to that’s different from the usual original 8-arc order?
What inspired you to start making videos?
I've been watching AniTube pretty much since it began along with listening to review podcasts and things because I didn't have offline friends who liked anime growing up to discuss it with but found that kind of content never really scratched the itch I wanted it to, though I couldn't put my finger on why. I was introduced to the video essay format via Super Eyepatch Wolf's Fall of Bleach video in 2016 -- I hadn't seen anything like it before and loved it. Down the line I found Under the Scope's channel and noticed the shift to that more analytical content on anime YouTube and the gears started turning in my brain. Writing has always been my main hobby and passion, but I didn't put two and two together until I got back into Higurashi and also couldn't find any Higurashi analytical content to read or watch. I started off writing small analyses and sharing them on Twitter and forums, then wrote the first draft of my first actual essay, which ultimately became Why Higurashi is My Favourite Series. I was setting up a blog to host it on with hundreds of accompanying screenshots and then got to thinking about how it would be nice to have accompanying music and at some point realised what I wanted to make was a video lol. I also knew it would reach more people that way. It was obviously daunting but I already had a microphone and (very) basic video and audio editing knowledge from a previous song cover channel I had as a teenager, plus that actual experience of having a public channel which helped me overcome the mental barrier (I was way past the self-consciousness everyone has about recording and hearing their voice). I also usually have one big creative project at a time and was looking for something to fill that void. I was torn between studying Psychology and English Literature at uni but ultimately went with Psychology and so didn't have that outlet there. I obviously had a lot to say about Higurashi, but also lots of other series. I got to work and had loads of fun making my first video, and here we are!
I know this is a weird question but have you ever seen Moral Orel? The character writing and way it handles trauma in season 3 seems like it's something that'd be right up your alley. If not, I want to clarify that I am not at all joking before you look it up and see that it's an old claymation show that aired on adult swim. It really is something that deeply affected me and helped me grow as a person.
Do you think the "fantasy" on higurashi(like hanyu for example) can be explained using the same reading concept of Umineko? (and based on some things like Akasaka and Oishi making the book of higurashi when they cry at the end of vol 4)
I know Umi questions are difficult to answer right now, but I was wondering if there was a point in the story that really hooked you. Higurashi is one of my all time favorite pieces of media, but upon reading the manga version for Umineko's first arc, I found that I wasn't invested at all and didn't want to continue, despite knowing how impactful Ryukishi's writing and characters can be. What might you say to encourage someone to read Umineko? Love all your incredible work and can't wait for whatever you share next ❤️
My WTC journey was I watched the Higu anime and it became an instant fave, then watched the Umi anime as it aired but could tell it wasn't a great adaptation which made me look into the VN, I read it and loved it and then went back and read the Higu VN! I think I found the premise intriguing and was gripped right from Episode 1 to be honest but it isn't for everyone and I'm inclined to say it's probably harder to get into the further it goes, the content gets denser and denser. I think it's a lot more "work" to read than Higu in many ways but would encourage it if at all possible as I think it's brilliant in its own unique ways and also really interesting as WTC3+4 -- it very much does expand and comment on the discussions Ryukishi begins with Higu. At the end of the day it's too long to force yourself through if you're not enjoying it and it may never click for you but none of my fave charas are even properly introduced in the first few arcs, my fave episodes are the last two and there's also the amazing OST which gets added to with each episode. I did take a few years to read it if that helps, I dipped in and out
Since Eupho new season is about to come out (i still can't believe it's happening ^^), what's your favorite character in the series? And why?
Would you consider also re-reading umi through the manga adaptation? except for the "confession of the golden witch" part, it has some additional content which I personally think it interpreted better than the VN, such as Ange’s reaction towards the family & Beato after knowing the single truth in ep8
idk if it's been asked before, but what are your opinions on the canon pairings in umineko? unless you plan on covering it in a video 🫢
We are still waiting for Rena's autistic coded discussion :3
You once said that Natsuhi's arc is better than Eva's arc. Eva is one of the most beloved characters in Umineko with really big scope and ceiling so I am curious why did you choose Natsuhi and her development over Eva.
