if you had a bad dream and then woke up, how do you calm yourself?

I calm myself by diving into a search for distraction—my most effective medicine thus far.

I'll regulate my breath first, drink a glass of water.. if that doesn't work I'll watch something to distract my mind from the bad dream.

Based on my experience, it was so difficult to open my eyes fully after had a nightmare. I will grab my phone to play any sound so I can be fully awake.
