Why do people want to be remembered and leave traces of their presence on earth so notoriously?

I think we’re told to think being remembered by others holds value, at least it seems that way in pop culture. I hear all the time that saying of people dying twice - once when they die and second when the last person who remembers them dies. Also, people care a lot about fame and impact in life and I think those people want it to transcend their own being. Some people want that for a good cause, something in history that was revolutionary or something in medical science that helps people - I guess they deserve that. But then there’s people who are evil and want to be infamously notorious and do terrible things for the purpose of them being known. Maybe they get the enjoyment of thinking about that fantasy before it happens and then it leads them to follow through. who knows how it effects them in the afterlife
