Oh hai anon, thank you for the Twenny question. Well, Twenny is my second fave ship and I could ship them just fine going off their personalities alone. I'm not sure I would've gotten as into it, though, if not for the increased association between them via the meth, as laid out in the games and on the show. Mainly because this led to an increase in works that examined their dynamic around the drugs + family connection. And I found these works compelling, and here I am now. Wow!

I think they'd get to talking during Tweek's drug runs to the McCormick residence as seen in the games. He's like Hey aughgHghH the garage is lockED Kenny—I need to get the stuff!!! And Kenny lets him in, and over time, they find they are unruly blond birds of a feather, both caught up in the family drug biz.

Diff sides of it for sure, manufacturing vs. distribution, but they are similarly .. unsupervised? Untethered? Given adult responsibilities far beyond their years? How many other kids are employed like these two (and David bring back David)?? Tweek's been told the family biz relies on him, that they'll have to sell him into slavery if a competitor moves into town, and Kenny's paying the utilities and trying to get his parents to stop smoking the supply and smacking the kids around.

They could both use a BREAK and I like to imagine the lowkey commiseration that could go on between them despite the disparities in their situations. I've always wanted to do a gen fic that looks at Kenny, Tweek, and Butters, and their respective home lives, because certain things they experience could make it harder to relate, or easier.

The type of severe poverty/material neglect/physical abuse Kenny and his siblings face is not experienced by any of the other kids, and imo it's both why Kenny takes on such adult responsibilities like keeping things together for Karen, and why he's so eager to seek out even dangerous escapist avenues (see: choking himself, huffing cat piss, spending time with Stan Kyle and Cartman).

One thing he is afforded by this situation is no expectation that his parents will ever provide for him. He does not respect or listen to his father, for ex., in 'The City Part of Town' when he's working hard to buy Karen a doll despite their father's insistence that he'll never earn enough to be upwardly mobile, in effect. He is maximally disappointed in his parents and would never think to rely on them for anything.

Tweek, on the other hand, is more of a frog in slowly boiling water (the water is emotional abuse/neglect!). He knows his parents are unhelpful but still has to rely on them and listen to them. He works hard to keep the cafe running and probably believes them when they say they can't afford other employees, or that they're at risk of losing everything. He's easy to manipulate and control in that sense, and his time is far more monopolized by working in the shop. I mean, he doesn't even have a house you can visit in either of the major games. His home base is the damn backroom of Tweek Bros 😭 free my man!!!

All that to say, I think because of the tumult and misery in which they were raised, the excess early responsibilities they shared, they would be able to have empathy for the experiences they did not share. But... also maybe some mutual appreciation of the other for being able to keep things light, because sometimes you just need not to think about it for a bit. I think they have really compatible traits (Kenny preferring warm, forward, a little bit dramatic types like Tammy and Kelly, and Tweek benefiting from someone who can be decisive or stay calm). I just find a whole host of dynamics between them fascinating, from them being vaguely weirded out by the other and thus avoidant, to toxic drug-fueled situationship, to ill-fated and doomed but sweet, to deeply devoted and in love.
