i don’t think people understand exactly what is the problem is with endgame and immediately jump to defend it by fixating on how mnho was portrayed. this never was the problem we’re trying to communicate. the problem with endgame isn’t how mnho was written, raesan actually wrote him pretty well, the problem is with the portrayal of jsvng & mnhos other friends. their actions towards him: they infantilised him, triggered and distressed him. used his autistic traits against him. this wouldn’t have necessarily been a problem if these behaviours had been called out and corrected— it could’ve been a very teachable moment. instead, in the end mnho excuses them and puts his discomfort and distress aside for the sake of a happy ending. the people around him never truly learn that their behaviour towards him is harmful, so will never correct that behaviour. this is a very real problem autistic people face all the time, compromising and dismissing our own discomfort in the way we’re treated for the sake of others. at the end of the day everyone else can close their yaoi tab and go about their day but we as autistic people will always have to face that kind of treatment. will always be talked down to, have our traits weaponised against us when we do or say things that upset others unintentionally. there’s no issue with exploring these sorts of themes if they’re treated sensitively. this fic doesn’t do that, it includes all these themes but there are no consequences for the perpetrators of such harmful behaviour and the repercussions of that then fall onto the autistic people consuming it. in the fic jsvng & mnhos friends treat him the way they do and in the end he excuses all of that for the sake of their relationship and a happy ending to the story, but in the end he’ll always have to deal with his lover & friends treating him in those ways. just like how we as austistic people have to deal with all that in reality. we curate our hobbies and interest spaces to be safe for us, often we use them as escapism. when we come into these spaces we regulate to be safe for us we don’t expect to face all the shit we have to deal with on the daily here too. if i’m not mistaken multiple people had questioned raesan about endgame during the period of her writing it, and she conveniently kept those asks hidden away on retrospring. when people brought it up privately she dismissed them with platitudes and eventually blocked them. she didn’t even try to revise the fic until the situation became public and even then as soon as people started defending her any empathy she may have felt or given towards people trying to communicate these issues seemed to dissipate instantly. she only truly cared about remedying things when she started getting public backlash for it.
