Sorry, follow-up question! Of the 125 applications you received, what was the breakdown between artists and writers?
Hello, no worries at all. Of those 125 applications, we had 65 page artists, 36 writers, and 24 merch artists!
How many contributor applications did the zine get?
In total, we received an amazing 125 applications!
sorry if this was already answered! what are estimates for how many contributors you are accepting, for each category?
Hello! As of now, we're predicting a total line-up of 33 contributors, with 20 page artists, 8 writers, and 5 merch artists. You may find this breakdown in our FAQ as well. Thank you for asking!
I accidentally forgot to put a kagehina piece in my samples so I put one in the front of my portfolio instead. Is that okay?
Yes, that’s fine; thank you for letting us know!
Ive changed some samples since applying. Will yall relook over the apps after submission close?
Yes, we’ll continue to grade and review applications after our form closes!
I included sketches of my pitch ideas in my portfolio to help visualize them. Is this okay or should I remove them?
Hello! That’s perfectly okay; if sketches help you visualize your pitch properly, we’d love to see them. Thank you for checking!
is this going to be a physical zine?
Yes, Stronger Than Blood will be a physical zine.
what is the difference between the portfolio section and the samples section? does that mean i’ll have to submit three different pieces aside from the ones i put in my portfolio already? sorry, i got a bit confused with that.
Hello! Your three samples are what you think are your best pieces, while your portfolio has other additional work (as well as those three samples, if you'd like) that further showcase your skill as a creator! It's almost like a job resume—put your best foot forward and provide some back-up experience to help you out!
If you need further help or want any points explained in depth, we have Contributor Guidelines as well as an Application Walkthrough posted on our Tumblr. Thank you for your question!
are u having contributors + guests? or only contributors found through apps?
xx sorry cant recall if there was a guest rec on the ICbefore it closed cant wait for this
No, we will not be inviting guest contributors. When planning the original concept of this project, we (Mods Anna, Finn, and Havoc) wanted to create a zine where everyone has equal opportunity to get in via applications and where newcomers are welcomed with open arms! We want Someone Even Better to be fun, beginner-friendly, and allowing of these newer contributors who may not have had the opportunity to participate in zines before a chance to create. While we're appreciative and supportive of guest contributors as a concept, sometimes guest positions can take space away from this idea!
No worries at all! Thank you for your question, and thank you kindly for your support thus far!

Hello! I noticed some discrepancies between your contributor app and your guidelines, so I just wanted to clarify. Your google form says that you'll read a max of 3.5k per individual piece, but your guidelines say you'll read a max of 5k per piece. Which is it?
Also, are the three complete pieces required only for the portfolio? You say excerpts are allowed, but you also say you want complete pieces, and it's not always clear whether you're referring to the individual submissions or the portfolio. Thanks!
Hello, thank you for catching this discrepancy in the form—it's been fixed! Our guidelines, which have been available for weeks, are what we expect during applications and what we'll be following when grading. No mod will read more than 15k combined on the three submitted samples.
As for your submissions themselves, in our guidelines and our applications advice walkthrough, we say it's recommended to have at minimum one and a preferred three complete works in order to showcase your ability to write a completed fic that stays on the short side, as the zine's word count requirement will only be 1.5k-3.5k. You do not need to submit these completed works for your specific samples (which are what we look at first, since they should be the works you think are your best); including them in your portfolio is enough. We apologize for any confusion. Thank you for checking!
Hi! I see that the mods will read a maximum of 5k for each piece, and that it would be good to submit at least 3 completed works between 1.5k and 3.5k in our portfolio, but what is the word requirement for the 3 samples of our best work that we need to submit?
Hello, you've essentially said it yourself! Your samples should showcase your strengths and follow our guidelines, and they should follow those recommended word counts. Anything less than 1.5k will not let us judge your work thoroughly; all we ask is that you make sure your samples do not exceed anything egregious like 30k words combined. We may have a high turnout of applications, and we won't have the time to commit to reading more than 15k per writer!
If you need any further clarification, please check our Info + FAQ and our Applications Advice post on Tumblr. Thank you for your question!
Hello! I was wondering if it'd be okay to apply with a ship the fandom deems problematic? It's not a NSFW fic or like dark or anything, but it's an age gap ship with a minor (Gojo & Yuuji from JJK to be exact) so I'd just like to know if I should avoid applying with that as one of my fics or if there are any stipulations! Thank you!!
Hello! We want to see your best work, so whatever you have to give us, we'll be happy to look at! As all mods on the team are adults and indifferent to the topic, we are okay with submissions that would be considered problematic or pro-ship. The content you engage with in your personal time has no conflict with us, as our main zine will be entirely SFW and a potential NSFW add-on is still currently in the works. However, it is highly encouraged to provide pieces that demonstrate what you could make for this project.
So, as a blanket statement, we want to say this: no one will be automatically disqualified for any type of content featured in their portfolios unless it displays any kind of hateful, racist, or homophobic/transphobic themes. Thank you for your question!
Will this be a for-profit zine or charity?
Hello! Someone Even Better will be a split profit zine, with half of the proceeds being donated to a charity and the remaining half distributed between all contributors on the project after shipping and production have concluded. Thank you for your question!
Will unpublished pieces/completed segments of unfinished pieces be allowed for writer sample submissions?
Yes, if you think these pieces showcase your abilities well, we will accept excerpts and unpublished pieces from writers during applications. However, it is recommended that any and all writers interested in applying submit at least three (3) finished pieces of at least 1,500 words each and no longer than 3,500 words. This allows us to evaluate and appreciate your skill in full, and see how you can manage with a word count limit. You may find more information about application guidelines in our FAQ + Info doc linked here.
Thank you for your question!
Hi, I don’t have experience with zines and was wondering, just in general, how the payments towards contributors are typically made (like through paypal, venmo, wire transfer, check, etc.) it doesn’t have to be for this one specifically but I couldn’t find info on this part of for-profit zines anywhere.
This is usually dependent on the finance mod, as well as region of contributors (as some digital banks are not permitted in some countries). Generally, PayPal is most commonly used, but there are zines that may use another source of digital payment, like Stripe. Sticking to only one of these is smartest, so as to keep conversion rates, fee percentages, and taxes from getting too complicated.
Hopefully this helps—please let us know if you have any further questions we may be able to help you with!
