How do you get rid of negative thoughts about bad things that don't necessarily happen?

I'm not always a positive, happy-go-lucky type of person, so usually I just try to remind myself about when I survived the worst moments in my life and how far I've gone by holding onto every tiny bit of hope I had left in me.
