First off Null and Void is one of the most clever names for a duo, It's adorable!
As for my question, concerning when that older guy asked Null if he was alone and he used sign language, where did Null learn that? Is he mute or hard of hearing? Or perhapse just too shy?

Null is selectively mute ... I think... I think it's autism that manifests in nonverbality but I'm not sure I may want them to just be mute?
