what is your take on soulmates?

as a real world thing, i don't particularly believe in it. or really i should say i think the title of 'soulmate' is something you earn— you make yourself significant and important enough to one another that it feels as though your souls have entwined together for better or worse. i like that interpretation over things that revolve around notions of fate and destiny, as i find them rather constricting and frankly anxiety inducing. my consequences, my love and my actions are not dictated by any force or power besides my own. no one else, nothing else, will be getting the credit for the work i put into my relations. but that's just me and my opinion on that.

as a fictional trope, i'm more favourable towards traditional soulmate stuff. i think its cute, especially when tied into reincarnation tropes or any sort of "we will meet each other in every lifetime" plot. but i only really truly enjoy soulmates with a sprinkle of angst. something to stop it from being too mushy, as i'm admittedly not a fan of the pure lovey dovey romance stuff. i need a bit of grit to invest
