Hi dr Zayne, is there any scientific explanation on why we cant bring ourselves to eat when we feel extremely sad?
Extreme emotional distress causes the body to release excessive amounts of cortisol and adrenaline. Adrenaline activates one's fight-or-flight response, which also suppresses one's hunger as the body is tricked into prioritizing survival through movement rather than replenishment.
Know that prolonged exposure to such extreme emotions can alter your brain chemistry in the long-run, making it more difficult to motivate yourself to function productively. Do not hesitate to seek help should life get too overwhelming to bear. Humans are social creatures; they simply cannot thrive alone.
