Do you play games often?
Not very often, but I think it depends. I'll go a long time without really playing games, then I'll dedicate a lot of time to a single game or two for a couple of weeks until I'm satisfied with it. I don't really play multiplayer games or things like MMOs... Mabinogi is the exception! I don't play that game super often right now but I'd really like to find other casual players to play Mabinogi with. I'm most interested in the dress up, social, and exploration aspect of it.
I loved the Maru Moro so much thank you!!
You're welcome!! Thank you for the request.
Your art is so cute how do you do it?
Oh! Thank you... I'm glad if you think so, since I try my very best to focus on style. I don't always get it quite right, but I focus on faces especially, which I think are the most impactful and really important to get right. I'll give away a few specific, general tips, based on a few compliments I've received in the past.
My art is frequently called 'soft', or that my lineart is specifically 'soft' and this is likely due to almost every piece having gaussian blurred lineart. Not only is it really aesthetically pleasing, it's SUPER simple and practically no effort. I use Clip Studio and this is as simple as duplicating your lineart layer and going to filter > gaussian blur and playing with the settings until you are satisfied with the result. If you know how to work Auto Actions, there are also many other interesting and sometimes more intricate ways to do a similar thing. I usually just manually do the above and do nothing special. (If you have Clip Studio please take advantage of the user submitted tools that are accessible because there is so much amazing and frequently free brushes, gradients, etc)
Look at your favorite artists' work. Look at it a lot!! Train your eyes to note what makes the style their style... Like specific highlight techniques, facial proportions, shapes, etc. Texture. Line thickness. I like to mimic styles and borrow techniques and it results in a generally fluid style that isn't stuck rigidly... Actually, I think I really struggle keeping to one style, which is a problem for some artists. I really enjoy looking at production materials and character reference sheets for anime that I really like the style of. Use references a lot when drawing. Maybe this is obvious, but my art is the result of many, many hours of studying my favorite artists' art by eye, and sometimes mimicking certain techniques. I think I'm very influenced by 2000s anime and games especially... And I've found that if your proportions or poses are not so good (It's rough for me), sometimes this matters a lot less if your STYLE is really attractive.
The faces... Make sure the faces are alright. I think it's what most viewers immediately notice first. They spot the imperfections there immediately, or any uncanniness, unless there's a big imperfection elsewhere. Within reason, you don't have to be a god at hands or bodies, if you have a great solid style and use of colors. I really realized this when I came upon certain artists whose bodies, poses, understanding of that sort of thing seemed to be very rudimentary, but the way they drew character emotion, faces, and texture was SO incredible, that I was captivated. They were able to draw something so impactful with what a lot of people would consider 'limited' or 'beginner' art, except you could tell that these artists were obviously NOT beginners. There is so much skill in picking colors, composition, and depicting emotion.
It's kind of a ramble, but those are my thoughts... Maybe they're helpful in some way!
Maru and Moro from xxxHolic look like characters youd draw I'd love to see them in your style
Hi! I decided to do something experimental with this. I really love CLAMP's style... They have many good works.
Have you ever considered making a visual novel?
Yes!! Actually, it's not something that I talk about on social media really, but it's kind of a dream of mine. Not exactly an original visual novel, but maybe a fan visual novel based off of a series. Smaller scale, likely kinetic visual novels...Or ones with only one or two choices. I'm both an artist and writer and I have fair confidence in my writing ability, so I've always dreamt about combining these two skills. The visual novel I'd make would likely be very heavily inspired by LiarSoft visual novels. For a short period of time I was learning Renpy to make a Klonoa visual novel, but moved onto other projects... I still have a gigantic folder of free-to-use music and sound effects gathered around the time I was learning Renpy and coming up with all sorts of ideas...
If Okage had a remake announced would your gut reaction be excitement or concern for the future?
I have selfish feelings and more general feelings... Because it's a game so near and dear to me, and because I've come to love it through its flaws, I've accepted it as it is and admittedly I think it would be difficult to not focus on the differences of a remake- I would really worry about art direction and budget and development time... It isn't a game that I can see would be given much budget... It's too much of a financial gamble. When I don't like remakes or remasters for some reason though, there will always be the original, and I can always go back to that and appreciate what I think it still does better. This is also an entirely selfish thought, but I'd worry about new fans. I feel like the quiet, peaceful and tight-knit dynamic of the current fandom is pleasant... Since it's a very old game, the majority of the fanbase is generally an older age, and it affects the culture in a way where I think some problems that can arise from younger fans' mentality generally is avoided. Any murmurs of issues or disagreements has been very lowkey and usually handled maturely... I don't see much of anything bad, ever.
What game is your favorite?
It's hard to pick one singular, specific game but what comes to mind is Okage: Shadow King and Klonoa (Phantomile a bit over Lunatea)... I think these will always be top favorites. I recommend Okage to anyone that can stomach turn-based RPG and likes story-focused RPGs. It's rough around the edges and has its flaws but the world and characters are endlessly charming.
What's your favorite color has it always been your favorite color or has it changed over time
I actually haven't thought about this in a long time- I think...... Pink. Pastel pink... I had a 'I hate pink, pink is too GIRLY' phase but I think I just really like pastels, especially pastel pink. I like softer less saturated colors... But I can't think of a color I specifically dislike. Pastel yellow is also very comforting.
