I just read your analysis and it’s smth I found myself really resonating with it. I have noticed myself like you and the original op that I lose interest in certain characterisations that are the most common. I came to the conclusion that the reason for that is that they are too simple for me. Too flat. Sh chooses to embrace his femininity, and that’s all people create his character around, giving him traits that are not the way we can observe him as (not claiming that we know all sides of them bc we don’t, I mean the character that is presented to us), hj is reduced on being a leader and two other members I see this stereotypical writing happening a lot is wsn (Sn being reduced to the muscle dom guy, while wy is the bbg and that’s his whole stick)(does it surprise me that these stereotypes mostly appear in the most popular ships? Nope) . The more I read the more characterisations like these feel one dimensional to me. People forget Sh‘s nerdish silliness and his sternness, people forget that Hj is very emotional and quite vocal about his emotions too. Whenever I find a story that manages to combine these I feel like I found a gemstone bc that’s when they feel complex and fleshed out and relatable in a way. Of course people have the right to write and read what they want. But I find myself craving for the three dimensional characters instead of the one dimensionals.

i agree with you and other people from my circle have mentioned similar feelings, that the way they get reduced to an unidimensional persona can be quite unappealing. it depends on the experience you wanna have, but if we're dealing with real people i find the least we can do is actually put in the effort to recognize multiple sides of them.
i understand that for some people the familiarity of certain tropes is what they seek out in fandom and that's a valid experience, just not for me. and i think if people opened up to explore these thoughts, reflect on why they prefer one thing or the other, whether what they're creating is bordering on stereotypes, they could learn a lot about themselves and we could have more honest conversations about all these things without it making the state of the fandom rancid to be in

i have a few thoughts regarding this happening to the most popular ships but i'm gonna save some words for another day lmao it's well observed though!!
thank you for reading my thoughts and sharing yours 💕
