(imagining karl originally speaking like a pirate then slowly morphing into a Canadian accent, like the way someone loses their accent when they move to america).
karl feels mostly lust for Nika, at first anyway, this is like. A “lust at first type” thing. karl doesn’t really have the mental capacity and experience at this point to understand this though so it comes out distorted, and through seemingly nonsexual means (killing and maiming as a form of intimacy). nika only realizes this when it’s far too late and she’s getting raped already. and yes, karl pretty must has loved nika the moment he realized her nature as an immortal being who has been forcibly disconnected from her own humanity. but different enough from him to not trigger his self disgust response, like say if he tried to date another statue (lol) . basically she’s just human enough to inspire his usual curiosity and fixation, but not human enough to despise her and want nothing to do with her. not that this means anything because he’s killing her anyway.. luckily enough after a certain point she knows him well enough to realize that he loves her without him having to say it because that man is never honest about anything ever
