hmm…i’m not sure if any of this will be surprising, but here are some vague rambling and possibly boring headcanons about reigen’s relationship with his parents hahaha…i think about this a lot, though none of my thoughts are set in stone :’D

so…most of the time i want to believe that forgetting to tell his parents about sports day that one time truly was the worst/loneliest early-ish childhood memory that reigen could come up with, just because i think that’s funny hahaha—so i usually prefer to think of him as having a pretty normal, loving relationship with his family throughout elementary school and into early middle school

however i also see his parents as being very concerned with appearances and respectability, which could make them a bit controlling/inflexible/critical when it comes to guarding their status as normal upright people…and so as reigen gets older and more independent/unconventional, maybe they try to nag and pressure him into conforming more. his failure to commit to any clubs in school despite his talents, his utter disinterest in having a respectable job despite his excellent academics, his vague desire to “be somebody”—i imagine they criticize him a lot for these things in an attempt to correct his behavior. they’re convinced that he’s smart and talented enough to succeed in a normal respectable way, so they don’t understand why he wants to mess around and squander his potential and embarrass them

naturally this ends up alienating reigen over the years. he resents that they think they can control him, that they see his life as theirs rather than as…his own sfdjdkdhsh. and he’s so unreceptive to them that at some point i guess they just kind of give up? though his mom worries and still sends the occasional email trying to reel him back in

i kind of like this because it contrasts a bit with mob’s parents, who are on the more laid-back/inattentive side haha? also i feel like it would add another layer to the separation arc…like when reigen finally realizes how much he’s been trying to control mob and prevent him from making his own choices, there would be this element of, “oh shit. i’m just like them” on top of everything else…
