Hi Britt, I'm one of the many people who read Barbarities because of your art and now loves GiLou! I read it from a scanlator since it's sadly not available in my country, but their translation of Gil's final monologue about Louis got me a bit confused about his feelings. I wanted to ask how you interpreted it, especially since you have the context of the JP version as well! Another thing, can you share how Louis' name is spelled in katakana? I'm trying to decide between using Louis or Luis, so would be great to know how it's pronounced. Thank you and have a lovely day!!
Luis’ name is ルイス in katakana, so Luis is the most literal translation (however, both the official French and Spanish translations use “Louis” so it’s still like, an acceptable spelling lol)
I don’t think the scanlation(s?) got anything glaringly wrong about Gil’s monologue in vol4 (just a bit underwhelming in the wording maybe lol) so you should be able to refer to it. Gil’s feelings towards Luis remain complicated, of course. There’s not really a way to soften the edges of their relationship, or to disregard the implications it has for Gil, but I think the main takeaway from his monologue is that these things are still so painful and significant to Gil but he has chosen Luis anyway. And he knows this is a hollow choice that can’t go anywhere. He says he’s “given up” wanting something real with Luis (being able to touch the light) but that he just wants to be able to look at this light from a distance. It is a very bittersweet and fitting note to end on for them, imo
It doesn’t really work to try and interpret their relationship as a standard romance, I think you have to just take it for what it is and spiral forever into speculation and over-analysis lol
