a curious little mouse · 6d

Avvy! Thoughts in the world of beatrix potter books/art? :))

I had VHS of these in my childhood... they were definitely very enchanting to me, particularly the animation style. I have pretty surprisingly strong memories of the one about the frog in the mouse's home, it had an eating sequence that really stuck with me...

More than anything I remember this song... https://youtu.be/Jn5ayRIRqjg?si=o03QUSSmXpK3c36u
it created such a somber and ... menacing....? feeling ... this got inside of me forever, I still think about it. It made me very afraid but captivated.....
the deranged way the lady in the framing narrative conducts her little house. It really, in retrospect, feels disquieting. In a kind of intriguing way. What were they going for.

overall few things these days try to capture the charm of illustrations like that; instead going for translating/updating things as much as possible, aesthetically. The texture of the fur is particularly lovely.

All things told however, they weren't as influential to me as other things. The 'english countryside' tone actually doesn't really appeal to me much, bonnets and teatime and politeness ... little petticoats and such ... I liked the animals, but I didn't like how they talked or dressed when they did. At its most relevant when it is kittens misbehaving or mice being rowdy. But the broader world isn't very interesting ... I don't feel any urge to emulate it or return to it, I guess. And I never wanted my worlds to quite feel like that.

The illustrations in the Tucker Mouse & Harry Kitten books (like A Cricket in Times Square) were more influential to me, but above all of these were the Poppy & Ragweed book series. I really stared at the illustrations in those, and especially the cover of Ragweed, for ages. I also really liked those worlds-- more of wild animals surviving in the corners... using what they can, not living in tiny human houses with tiny human teasets. I liked the visual of Clutch's large, heavy earring, disproportionate to a mouse. Mice would just be eaten by owls out there ... captivating... Ragweed just fucking dies.... I named a lot of OCs Ragweed, for a while, as a kid.

Some other thing of random big influence I actually CANNOT FIND, despire searching, was a green book of aesop fables my family had above the kitchen table, which had ink illustrations of all the tales ... I just know the foxes and storks and such in that really enchanted me. I have to imagine they were naturalistic....

wobbling my hands around!! So those are things I think in the general wheelhouse. Beatrix Potter isn't Nothing to me, it's definitely more to me than worlds like Redwall or Warrior Cats (snailpo BLEHHHH), LOL. But I don't list it when contemplating key inspirations in childhood..
