this is such a meghan ladynoir question. but i don't really have thoughts on it bc I've never seen it and I live on a different continent & in a country that was building something entirely different in the 1930s. though i do appreciate its significance in terms of how it utilized late 19/early 20th c engineering innovations which made it possible to complete the building in less than 2 years iirc? idk how many labourers it took to finish. now im rly curious. im not a fan of skyscrapers personally. and this was the tallest building in the world for a few decades which is wild. i think skyscrapers are always built as a display of power and rarely in interest of the people. it's very stylish for its time period and i think art deco has a timeless & universal appeal and i like how form-wise it draws inspo from the mesopotamian antiquity. this all gives the facade some depth & makes it interesting to look at. i don't exactly know its organization or its history (in the sense of how people interacted with it) i only know/assume it's swarming with tourists now. i know that new york city's skyline changes all the time and maybe this building isn't as dominant as some younger and taller skyscrapers but it will forever exist in the people's consciousness as a part of the city's iconography. so i guess to sum it up i appreciate it for its place in architecture, art & engineering history and place in culture & pop culture but i don't have strong opinions one way or the other. and i find these questions funny bc if u ask architects sth like this about historical buildings they'll just recite art history books and it's hard to think critically abt something that's deemed sacred and untouchable. would like to visit it and see though!!
