Are books a good investment? If so, which in your collection do you like the most?

I was looking for a book from my childhood that I wanted to gift my niece - “the talking parcel.” I discovered new hardcover copies go for ~$300-$1000.... ummm... why??! Just found a used paperback with the alternate title “the battle for castle cockatrice” for $15.
