I'm neutral toward the concept of a birthday. I don't think it's odd if someone doesn't celebrate, nor do I care if someone wants to celebrate extravagantly. There is some worth in acknowledging you've survived another year, isn't there? Many people don't.
Personally, I like to do something small on my birthday. My 'celebration' usually involves birthday sex but when that is out of the equation, lounging in bed for most of the day or watching a movie with my partner is enough to make me happy. I have never been a party person or someone who enjoys a lot of calls, cards, and attention, so I like the way things are.
This year, I'd planned a party for my birthday, but wound up getting really bad anxiety. So I "cancelled" my birthday party and had a "regular Saturday party" in its place, which was really fun and might become a new tradition.
My birthday usually depresses the fuck out of me, but I still like trying to celebrate myself, and that seems as good a time as any. I love celebrating other peoples' birthdays, though.
I observe mine, but I dont really like celebrating it. I'm uncomfortable with the concept of having a party for/about myself, so I typically keep mostly to myself that day. last year I was out of the city on my birthday, and only saw my bf, and we made pasta at home. not sure what I'm doing this year but probably something equally low-key. recieving a present makes me really uncomfortable if I don't have something to give in return, so that's another ding against birthdays for me
I do enjoy getting older, and having a time to reflect on personal growth+development, but I do more of that at new year's than around my birthday
(btw I've been mostly out of it, so happy birthday to whoever's birthday it is!)
