Do modern computer monitors use a significant amount of energy in standby mode? Why so many people believe they do?

So I found this energy calculator and plugged in 24 hours a day usage (not standby, actual usage) for my monitor size and wattage and the local cost and it came out to about 1 kilowatt-hour per day, and around $35 for a year , check it out and play with the numbers yourself!
