YES I AGREE. I think tsundere high school Gojo can go a little too far (to the point it feels ooc to me), so I really like when the reasons for why he’s being tsundere are grounded. Like!! He can’t be mean just for the sake of being mean! He’s just trying to look strong and competent in front of Yuuji, but he doesn’t really realize that putting others down (including his love interest LMAO) is not exactly what we call a “good look.” Yuuji’s specialty is empathy, so I think he’d pick up pretty quickly that Satoru doesn’t really mean the things he’s saying, and I think him calling him out on that could be super cute and sweet 🥺 like making him admit, yeah. He just wants to look cool. Yeah he wants Yuuji to like him. He actually has insecurities and problems and that he really admires Yuuji for being able to see the true him (something that Satoru himself isn’t really good at doing)(communicating with people).

AHH ANOTHER PERSON? SURE I CAN TRY? It's difficult to give general writing tips, since everyone needs different advice for different things and I don't want to generalize. Also there's some things I struggle with and haven't figured out yet so... 😅 I can share how I conceptualize my own works, at least!

I view art as a way to communicate emotion. You can explain that you are sad, but you cannot have someone feel your sadness through just explaining it. So, if art is communication, writing is a conversation. I usually pick a topic/theme and then have that theme explored through a variety of character's perspectives. Instead of character "traits," I think of characters having "values," and these values will get tested as a way to explore this theme.

I'll give an example!

In my work But to you, it's just words... (aka Walking Sim), the main "idea" is about "forbidden knowledge," or rather "is it worth it to know something if it hurts you to know it?" Satoru's values say, "yes! It's absolutely worth it, in every circumstance!" Or rather, no matter how much something hurts to know, the acquisition of knowledge is always the most important to him. If a character values family over their own personal self, they might be a sacrificial type, etc. things like that, that's how I conceptualize characters. Obviously, not all characters will follow their values in every circumstance, and it's those circumstances that are the most interesting to read! (i.e. that's your character development :D) In a later section of Walking Sim, there's going to be challenge where he has to prioritize something above knowledge, but you'll have to wait until I get there LMAO

This absolutely works for porn, too. In my recent fic, Devil's Trumpet, I wanted to explore the idea of how the sober mind can be equally as "intoxicated" as someone under the influence, so Satoru's actions of impulsivity are a reflection of that irrationality. You can explore things like pleasure through pain, how loving someone can make sex feel better, shame, a particular kink!! there's so many options but it definitely applies to porn too!!!

I think something I need to work on is getting these thoughts down before I begin a story. I think often, I don't quite know what I want to say with a character, and they end up wandering around a bit (i.e. inconsistent), a good example of this would be Yuuji in Walking Sim. I think if I rewrote it, I would give him a lot more agency as a protagonist, and really challenge his values.

Aside from this, I really prioritize succinctness, or cutting things to be as straightforward as possible, but this also gives me the bad habit of stating things TOO bluntly, so subtlety is something I've really been working on the past couple fics. I know this isn't how everyone writes (and that's a very good thing lol) but I hope this helps!

ANON-KUN THIS IS INCREDIBLY SPECIFIC????? okay, if I were given this as a prompt, probably what I would do is keep Yuuji and Gojo's relationship stable/"healthy", and explore the relationship between Yuuji and his family. (and contrast this with Gojo's relationship to his family)
I would make it a situation where Choso and Sukuna clearly care about Yuuji, but it's sort of a thing where they view him as the "innocent baby brother who can't make decisions for himself," and understanding that it would be hypocritical of them to hold Yuuji to higher expectations than they can actually achieve themselves. It'd be the sort of thing where you're worried the choices someone you love makes are going to hurt them, but you see that it's made them genuinely happy, you rethink that. I think in the end Yuuji's brothers would prioritize his happiness (or. at least Choso would LMFAO)

Honestly I think Sukuna would be like 🤨 "you're doing what?" but ultimately not really care about what shit decisions Yuuji wants to make, maybe just laugh at him/mock him a bit. Gojo would probably get on his nerves though, so that's a different situation LMAO.

I think it would be interesting too for Gojo to actually like Choso and Sukuna, because they'd be a family that actually is responsive and loving to Yuuji, which is very much unlike how I imagine the Gojo family to be (very cold and calculating). I have this headcanon that Satoru's mother was overbearing and particularly emotionally manipulative when he was a child (not so much once he got to be a teenager).

HMM, something I really love about Gojo's character is that he's super versatile in how you want to depict him. I usually view his character as a "villain whose main flaw is that he's a good guy™️," so leaning into the villain part (with him indulging in his sadism) can be super delicious, but also having him be guilty about it makes sense to me too! I think it really depends on what I want to say with my story at the time.

I am very partial to teen Gojo, since I think it's very fun to write someone confident about their abilities yet completely unaware of their flaws. I actually minored in Japanese during undergrad, so I took courses for three years! Obviously, I'm still nowhere near fluent, but I could probably hold down a basic conversation??? The best resource for kanji+vocabluary though has been Wanikani (website/app). You have to pay after a certain level, but it's definitely been worth it for me since I'm a huge fucking nerd. I LOVEEE learning about weird/esoteric characters :D there's something so fascinating about the history and story behind each one, it makes me want to learn more. Languages are so cool.
