one overarching hc i have for them is when they’re somehow Finally formally dating, chisei would end up being more clueless than haruomi does because it’s just So Different from what he’s used to. haruomi just acts like how he does normally albeit a bit more affectionate and chisei doesn’t really know what to do because he only has experience in whirlwind romance with minimum actual feelings involvement. he’s so confused when it comes to domestic romanticism, but he learns quick tho. that’s his journey to old man yaoi roots. i think he’d end up liking that better as he can just be how he is, tho he’d take haruomi out to do fun things once in a while for sure. this one is amusing because initially i saw them as the opposite before i dig around the source materials a bit deeper.

this one is more canon adjacent and the basis for the one i mentioned but i like to think chisei is really just some guy who’s balls deep in playing metaphorical god (notice how he’s shown to be good at everything he does, from basketball to music and even wields his phantometal without trauma, allegedly <- i personally think that’s not the case, tho) he inevitably isolated himself from others—as in, having a hard time forming genuine connections. in comes haruomi, who’s on par with chisei from one perspective (master trackmaker) but other than that just a dude who for the most part treats chisei like he’s just a brat /affectionate. their dynamic thus are mutually satisfying as in chisei brings excitement and thrill to haruomi’s life as haruomi grounds chisei as a fellow human being and facilitates further social connections. i might not be explaining this well but if you look up the absolute nightmare and sweater boy dynamic in queer media, i think you’d get what i mean LMAO chiseharu in my mind fits the role to a T

hmmm it varies between different ships but i guess the general short answer is how the characters are fundamental to each other's character arcs like, say, introducing an overarching conflict or initiating a major development. i also like how in most cases they're somewhat opposites when they are presented yet there are notable parallels to the characters' perspectives of each other and/or their relationships. another thing is subverted power dynamics... i'm a sucker for power dynamics, especially when it diverges from the common tropes the ship would fit into or from how they're introduced as.
