any kinks that work better for you in one language and not as much in another?
You just had to go for the hornet's nest... This is actually one of those topics I could talk about for hours on end, but to sum it up: it's not that there are kinks that work better in a language and worse in another, is that every language has its strong suits and while writing general-you want to play with that.
So, like, in Italian you have "ragazzo" (masculine) that can translate as "kid" (most often with the specific connotation of one's own son), "young man" (with somewhat of a belittling tone), or "boyfriend" (neutral in meaning, but mostly used when under 30 because "ragazzo" implies youth, and so when getting older people start to swap it with a more mature/serious-sounding synonym, like "compagno", companion/partner). Which of the three meanings is implied changes depending on the context of the conversation, so you can see how glorious of a word it can be when writing age gap ships and incest both as a trope and as a kink. You could, potentially, add three different layers onto a simple sentence by playing with how every character in the scene understand that word in relation to the other characters. English could never. Love that for me specifically.
English tends to work better with made-up words and labels, like omegaverse terminology and even BDSM titles, but that's mostly because therefore there is less emotional/personal baggage on them. The word "knot" with the connotation of wolf dick sounds as alien to me in Italian as it does in English to an English native speaker who's not into omegaverse; it's just that, in my case, the English "knot" does not sound alien because I learned English by reading monsterfucking novels. Which was not the smartest choice, but here we are. So for omegaverse I struggle a bit more because a lot of genre-specific words are hard to translate (like "slick", whose direct translation in Italian sounds more like "slime", with the specific bleagh-like meaning).
When it comes to BDSM titles/labels, a lot of them are so specifically American both in culture and in terminology. Recently in an Italian fannish group we were discussing how to translate the endearment "pet" in Italian. It's fucking hard, man. "Puppy" also loses its snappiness when translated, so sometimes you gotta play around with it, and sometimes that means that "canonical" BDSM labels are swapped with something else. I doesn't help that the Italian BDSM community tends to either translate words 1:1 or they leave them in English, which is just the worst for me. Like, my pet peeve is using "Daddy" and "Mommy" in English instead of their Italian counterparts. This last one seems to be because any translation of Daddy and Mommy sounds a bit too personal and childish, but isn't that the appeal? Anyway...
I personally do not mind it not respecting the "canonical" structure of American BDSM—my philosophy is that you gotta adapt the kink to the characters, and I am not against twisting a pre-existing terminology if that's what works best for me—but I know that many other Italian fans actually prefer to stick to the American terminology, sometimes to the point of refusing to translate words. Like calling an omegaverse "nest" nest instead of the Italian "nido". Not really my jam, it feels like a cop-out, also it's unfair because I want to be gut punched by the emotional connection I have with words.
As for English, recently in a novel I found the words "playrape" and "rapetoy" used in the specific context of a character flirting by sharing their CNC kink, and I've been going crazy trying to find a possible Italian version of those because I need to used them, OK. Sadly, Italian is not great at smashing words together, so you gotta go in other directions. I love playing with languages, though, so the answer is that all kinks can work, you just gotta know how to make them work for the language you're using (daily I love languages, I love Italian, I hate English tweets)
mhyk omegaverse headcanons?
I like being delusional so I want omega!Brad marking all of his underlings with a bite so that he can find them more easily. Also, the bite is somewhat soothing because it gives the perception of actually belonging with him.
I would love it if beta!Nero's betrayal came with him cancelling Brad's claim on him. I can just imagine how viscerally violent it would be for Bradley to physically feel the mark being erased. It would feel just as violent for Nero, I think, because he'd be left with the visible scar of his own failure. Also, I think Nero would keep on missing the connection that he once had with Bradley, and when they meet again it also becomes obvious that he won't be able to feel that closeness once again... Like, every day he spends next to Bradley now is a reminder of what Nero has lost. Gotta feel pretty rough (love this).
I don't want to change anything else, though. I'd like it if being alpha/beta/omega mattered less in the North because if strength is king, then a Northern wizards knows not to let themself be fooled by another wizard's gender. Diversity win?
Also, also, what if the claiming bite had different connotations in different countries? I like the concept of the South recognizing the bite similarly to wedding vows—so, it would be something that the couple/throuple/whatev does to each other, like a ring exchange. That would makes sense considering how closely Southern wizards live with humans. (But would this imply that A/B/O genders existed only in wizards? Food for thoughts...)
But in the North, the claiming bite maybe does not have to have romantic or sexual connotations by itself? I guess it would be interesting for it to describe more of a power dynamic/hierarchy, with the bite being given by the more powerful one onto the less powerful one as a way of confirming some type of ownership. I'd love for the Northern wizards to have a twisted understanding of the bite, which would make any Mithra/Rutile interaction all the more fun. Also! Arthur not being claimed by Oz would give so much depth to their relationship, with Arthur feeling both lacking for not having been bitten and with Oz struggling with not really wanting to own him like he's owned so many people before him.
I feel like Central Country could be the middle ground with the more "legalized" view of the bite, so it's done by the Alpha onto the Omega, but you gotta go through an official ceremony for it to count legally. Meanwhile, maybe in Western Country there is a certain philosopher wizard developing some kind of tool to erase the biting mark without it ruining potential future re-markings...
And, and, and maybe Eastern Country could maybe consider the biting mark an age old tradition that is given by a noble onto their most trusted subject. I feel like that would make the Heath/Shino relationship a constant reminder of their difference in status, which obviously is god tier in canon also. I'd like both Shino and Heath to be alphas, but Heath's alphaness is mostly suppressed because of his upbringing. Maybe Shino's adrenaline goes a little haywire when Heath actually unleashes his pheromones? That would be good, like real good for me only, LMAO.
I've honestly talked too much but obviously I have perceived Leno as beta, he is just so beta-shaped, and that's a compliment. Faust and Figaro both alphas simply because I think Figaro could embody the old type of alpha that takes a newbie alpha under his lead to show them the ropes on how to guide other people. Funny how that works out when Faust has his first knot....... I should honestly shut up
do u like omegaverse
I am so very into the more dystopian kind of omegaverse, where the characters are Not Enjoying what's going on. It doesn't have to be dark, necessarily, but there has to be some kind of focus on the concepts of nature vs nurture/instinct vs reason + all the gendered dynamics that can exist in omegaverse stories, be it a retracing of IRL issues or an exaggeration for speculative purposes. Honestly though, incest in omegaverse stories hits so hard. I will one day write that fic with omega!Sanemi that has to hide his heats whenever Genya is around. Or that one MakiMai with the twins bonding in the womb... hopefully soon
what are u writing??
too many things actually (pls save me). the doc that's currently open is a gojo/yuuji/nanami fic bc i do love older characters who want to be a guiding light for their younger lover, but then end up discovering new parts about themselves they were too blind to see on their own. i feel like it works well with nanamin/gojo and yuuji, especially. i also cycle around 1) the hiroten pissfic sequel for a3 rpw that will not be finished in time, 2) a nobamakimai with pet play and lots of sexual/gender trauma bc why not, and 3) a sane>oba<mitsu that's genderfucky in a way that feel a tad too personal, i think. i do love that writing is hard work but why does it have to be hard work. why can't it be easy to simply write about things. why is it good that it's not easy, also. we have no answers
