"I set you free" that's a clear indication of breaking up right?

That phrase implies some weird things. Weren't they "free" before breaking up? Or even worse, weren't you "free" before breaking up? Plus, that sounds slightly dramatic/childish (I'm sure I've heard something similar in a soap opera). But at least it's fun and tones down the negativity of breaking up.
