It has to do with the fact he was his starter and they basically grew up together, they're pretty much aware of the fact they act similar. Grim thinks of him as his brother

A number of mine have similarities with their aces. The most notable one is probably Grendam and his Haxorus named Ripp. He trained him from early on to play music and fight enthusiastically. He even took a powerful attack to protect Ripp when a sparring match got out of hand once, which caused further admiration.

For kingston I guess there are some slight similarities bc colour scheme and the back window of his e4 outfit being shaped like honedges hilt. But they're very loosely based on the pokemon. Ruths new design was based more off existing aether characters which also dont resemble their pokemon qwq
