Subjugate is a for-profit Millions Knives-centric Trigun Fanzine • All Fans Welcome!
can anyone doodle? Even if they're not part of the zine?
Absolutely!! The Millions Doodles 'n Drabbles event is open to anyone! Please submit all the prompts, doodles, and drabbles!
We will be including some of the works in a special section of the zine, including voluntary submissions from non-contributors with their permission, credit, and without compensation. We will reach out if we wish to include a non-contributor's work!
Hello! Just curious how many pages the zines will be?
Hi there! At this time, we are still in the final formatting stage, so we do not have a final page count, BUT here is what you can find in our zines!
SFW Edition - 20 Contributors
- Unique SFW Edition Cover Art
- 5 Written SFW works ~2500 words each
- 12 SFW Single Art Pages
- 2 SFW Double Page Art Spreads (4 pages)
SFW+NSFW Edition - 20 SFW + 15 NSFW Contributors (35 total)
- Unique SFW+NSFW Edition Cover Art
- Everything included in the SFW Edition
- 4 Written NSFW works ~2500 words each
- 6 NSFW Single Art Pages
- 3 NSFW Double Page Art Spreads (6 pages)
- 1 NSFW Multi-page Comic (4 pages)
We look forward to sharing all our wonderful creations with you!

Is it alright if all three pieces are complete works? And if so, can they all fall under the 2500 or less range?
Hi! I saw that there was a sfw and nsfw writer application, should my samples be sfw and nsfw or should I just send in two different applications, one for sfw and one for nsfw?
Great question!
We would definitely love to see some samples of both - being at least one of your 'best work' samples being NSFW or one of SFW. You don't need to submit 2 applications. We allow you to highlight up to 4 (3 at minimum); if you have two SFW and two NSFW, you are covered! Also, if you have multiple other samples in your portfolio of varied ratings (your AO3 profile, for example), we may dive deeper into those if we see fit to get a better feel for your writing style.
Hope this helps!
Hello! I did send this via twitter dm (so if you see this one first, please go ahead and ignore!) but I figure actually asking publicly might be better since I for sure can't be the only one with a similar question:
So, I'm looking through the contributor app, and it says the word limit for samples is 1.5k words & that one of those needs to be completed, but I don't have any complete works that are under 1.5k words. I average about 2k or more for one shots and chapters of longer pieces. Should I make a note of this somewhere in the application or is there another option?
Hi there! I did follow up with you in DM, but in regards to written samples, we've tweaked the wordcount a bit!
Hope this helps writers find an easier time filling out their applications! Of course if anyone isn't quite sure about a sample piece, get in touch!
Hi! I was just wondering regarding the artist contributor applications, can we share our non-fanwork for samples? I was just wondering as the application asks for ships and stuff for each piece submission. Thank you!
You can definitely share original work/non-fanworks!
Just include generic descriptions of the subjects included in the piece. i.e. OMC (original male character), and if there is some level of romantic connection: OC/OMC/OFC x OC/OMC/OFC. The tags/warnings section is most important for each piece.
Hope this helps!
For the writers applications (when they open) - it says you want 3 self-contained examples of writing no more than 1.5k words. Is this the total word count limit, or is it 3 passages which are 1.5k words long each?
Should we be concerned by a mod also modding an anti zine?
Hello! We are SO sorry for the delay!
One of the head mods (Lan) was locked out of Discord for a few weeks, and contact between mods was extremely limited! I have been swamped with Maker's Dozen, so taking the lead in their absence wasn't in the cards.
Your concern is valid. I have only recently heard about this project due to the above, and I am discussing with my co-head how we move forward and make our values clear. I have a zero-tolerance policy regarding content limitation (outside of limitations provided by a printer in a for-print project - if we move forward with Digital-only NSFW zine, there will be no content restrictions). The Interest Check will determine whether this project is a SFW Knives Gen Zine (no ships) or a SFW + Ships Zine, and whether we have a bonus NSFW side zine.
If we proceed with a ship-inclusive zine(s), ALL ships will be allowed SFW or NSFW.
If you are concerned about my support of problematic fiction, please review my personal library of creative works. ;) (https://ao3.org/users/squishycake)
It's been two weeks since your schedule said the interest check was supposed to go up. Is this zine still happening?
Hello there! Thanks for your question!

We are looking at opening our Interest Check in early September, with Applications opening in October. My schedule conflicted too much between Maker's Dozen and the initial schedule for Subjugate, so we decided to shift things a bit! Since Lan has been unavailable for so long, we have not solidify our specific updated schedule. This week we will be hashing out all those details.
Thanks for reaching out, and so sorry for the radio silence!

Hi, it has come to our attention recently that someone on the mod team is also participating in an anti-run project that is explicit about doing background checks on applicants. How can you make sure that this zine is safe to apply to/buy for those who enjoy problematic topics in fiction? (Not intending this question as a gotcha at all, just curious, considering that real life finances are involved.)

When will the results for mod apps go out? The form said emails would be sent on the 7th but I did not receive anything.

Hi, I was wondering what your reasoning is for only giving writers 1-1.5k of words to work with? If you say it's a matter of space, you are allowing multiple artists to do multiple page spreads/comics. Most zines ask writers to write 2-2.5k words and almost halving this, personally I find it very insulting to writers everywhere. It kinda shows a disregard for writers and a preference for pretty pictures, especially when the artist to writer ratio looks to be about 6:1 :/ I just want to know if you're going to consider allowing writers the ability to write more.

When it comes to number of contributors, writers to artists, all these numbers and wordcount are subject to change, as is our rules set post-Interest Check. We are looking at both possibilities for Digital-only versus Printed based on Interst Check results, and Digital-only offers us more flexibility regarding "space". Quite a few of the guidelines were provided based on another zine project, which does not mean it will fit perfectly within ours as we move along.
I am a writer myself and LOVE having high Writer representations in projects. Ultimately, the limitations come down to what the Writing Mod can handle proofing/betaing within a set timeframe before formatting begins. I've been in discussion with our Writing Mod in the past regarding increasing the number of writers, and we'll make sure to have specific details by the time applications open post-Interest Check. Please don't feel discouraged; we will welcome all levels of feedback in our Interest Check to build the project that YOU all want!
Hi, I was wondering how guest writers/artists will be chosen? I’ve noticed for some of the other zines, it seems like the same guests are chosen and was wondering if it will be based on popularity?
Thanks for your question! Regarding guest artists/writers, we will look at suggested creators provided during our Interest Check and moderator suggestions. Whether they are popular or someone's niche favorite, we will give everyone a look to see if they would be someone we'd like to invite to the project! Be sure to share some of your favorites when the Interest Check opens!
Hey! I was wondering if the pre-order timeline is definite or if mods would be willing to adjust? I’m interested in applying as a finance mod but will be holding POs for a different zine in March.
Hello, on your carrd you mention something about not wanting contributors who promote pedophilia. Can you please elaborate exactly what you mean by that as fandom antis have ruined the word. Like, do you mean genuine pedophilia or writing sexual content of underage fictional characters in fanfiction stories?
