What's the problem with people and the greetings, manners or politeness? Is it that hard to just say good morning, hello, goodbye, thanks, please, etc?

I feel guilty if I don't say please or thank you. I worry about people thinking I'm ignorant

Some people might think it's weak to have very good manners.
Yes, saying these too many times can be annoying
They think "It's Corona, I can do whatever I want in that fashion regard!"

You cannot expect a person who fought through 37 levels of Resident Evil to be nice to people after that, but I can relate to your question, not everybody is a gamer and the number of silent rude people is alarming.
Funny thing is that many of them reached a high academic level but I guess they referred to sth else when they called "education"
haha, I never played Resident Evil, as Dingus found out I'm rather a C&C girl. LOL.
And education doesn't mean education for life any more which should include at least some basic abilities to handle and please and get along with other people.
We did play that actually and I won often. I sunk the carrier with a single submarine once.
After that I got accused of cheating and the sisterly peace was shattered.
As a girl I was very fond of pirates and played epic sea warfare scenes with frigates and pirate ships on paper. I learned how to draw sails and ships
.. and we are back to Meridas question. Where went my human education? Friendliness and politeness? Yeah, you cannot deal friendly with deadly pirates!
