this isn't the last thing I learned but it's something new that upturned a misconception I had tbh. I used to think hibernators didn't sleep during hibernation because all publications in this topic I've seen show very low EEG waves across the torpor period. but it looks like what may actually be happening is that they're undergoing one sleep cycle that is so elongated that it's hard to capture in the EEG signal. so they are sleeping, but all the various proteins regulating the circadian rhythms are being made and doing their jobs at a much slower rate, which makes sense. most hibernators have a body temp that's near freezing during torpor and low body temp means ur molecules can't move that fast

Someone mentioned there being a "Jewish tradition" to this which apparently involves leaving stones and I responded "do they swipe the change?" And now I'm banned from posting for 24hrs.
I was watching an interesting documentary earlier about how different animals play, and why. One of the animals was the Kea, a species of parrot from New Zealand considered the most intelligent species of bird in the world. Keas have a specific call to indicate that they're in a playful mood, and like laughter in humans, it's contagious. All it takes is for one to do the call and they stop what they were doing and play together. For wild Keas, that sometimes involves landing on a car and causing damage to it by biting and pulling off anything they can.
There was also a demonstration of this behaviour with Keas at a research station in Austria. Firstly some colourful toys were placed on the ground, and the inquisitive parrots went to investigate. When they got bored with the toys and went back to doing not much in particular, the researcher played a recording of the "let's play" call, and the Keas immediately went back to playing with the toys again.
Most people are apparently born with a fear of spiders, it isn't purely conditioned. Scientists tested this on babies and found they didn't react to pictures of various animals but upon seeing pictures of spiders their pupils dilated and some started crying. So, I guess I now don't feel as bad for being a total pussy.
