Usually I say, What are u yelling about? Sometimes it works. For me music will calm me down. And generally I don't get too worked up:)
A few times I did have success with 'calm' down. But the majority did need a slap in the face or even tougher means. When the panic system in a human is activated the ability to listen is almost lost. Try to stop a stampede. Not that I slapped people. But it would have been effective.I resorted to brutal yelling like in the army. The other means depending on the character is to let people vent the panic by making them do things, like e.g. cleaning, sorting, packing and unpacking.
Nah, it is an excellent way to further aggravate someone, though...it depends, are they upset at ME?? Because 'calm down' is probably the worst thing to say then...my approach is kinda like...you know how when you are driving on ice and you start to lose control, and they tell you to steer into the direction you're sliding and not against it? Of course you wouldn't know that, Mrs. California 😛 anyway similar theory, it's counterintuitive but you steer into the upset, acknowledge it, understand it, empathize...I'm just naturally calm, even if I'm mad about something I'll recover fast, I won't forget it but I'm not going to be emotional about it
