On a scale from 1-10 -..- 1 = I want to get rid of it right now fucking please! / 10 = I would give my life for it no question! How important is your family name to you? (3 for me.)

4 or 5, I don't have very strong feelings about it one way or the other. But I guess it seems unfitting that I should have the same name as a bunch of people who would burn me at the stake. I also have a whole ass second parent with her own name, and that's considered a relatively unimportant part of who I am. So I don't see why I should feel my father's name is an immensely important part of who I am. Seems like some bullshit

3 - My paternal grandfather was adopted, taken from his mother because he was born out of wedlock. My surname comes from his adoptive parents. It's also not a great surname, it's an easy target for other kids to make fun of when you're growing up. So I'm not overly keen of it.

I'm not thrilled about it, but it does make me sound distinguished, so 6-7 I guess. I'm the last person in my extended family to carry the name, so I think my aunts wish I would have kids, but I don't see that happening. =P

8? it's an important part of my identity; it says something about where i came from. there's no reason for me to change my last name if i get married because that's some patriarchal/property bullshit

Probably a 7. Like its not the end of the world, but I know I'd forever be called a bitch if I sacrificed my family name in the marriage.
