Mine kinda died when I stripped myself of dignity in the past. But I don't like conflict and giving hurt to others. Plus I still have a lot of behaviours based around minimizing danger. If I forego that something is seriously wrong.

You mean retaliate I guess? Your conscience might tell you that hurting and being hurt are not symmetrical. When you exchange victim and offender the situation changes. Retaliation only works in very rare situations. But we think, expect and hope it does so firmly that we take that sometimes for granted. There is no real tit for tat.
