Are we all really just looking to date/marry a version of our mother or father?

I've heard it before, I love and respect my mother - she is kind and positive. But these are just generic admirable traits. If a woman has it, I wont consciously think it's my mum.

It's the opposite, at least for me. Mine were emotionally negligent; several times when I still lived with my parents (as a young child but also as an over 18er), my mom would tell me "my job is to feed you, and that's it, nothing else." I don't want to marry someone who truly thinks that's the only responsibility they have as a parent. I think I've taken on all the parts of my parents that are good, but I want my future life partner to be good through and through. Most importantly I'd like them to NOT be emotionally repressed bc that shit's just toxic and tiring

I've heard that but I don't know that it's necessarily true. Many people hate or just dislike their parents. And a lot of the girls I've liked haven't been much like my mom.
