You have to fire somebody. How do you do it?

Just be straight up with them about the reasons but also not be a douche about it

I’d try to be as gentle as possible and state the reasons why he/she was being let go.

I've done it twice but neither of them was innocent - one was a repeat sexual harasser and one was falsifying their time/pay ... those cases were just kind of direct, no long speeches (from me), just a few sentences and they understood ... I still feel bad about messin with other people's making a living even if they brought it on themselves

no sense prolonging the suffering. 'X I've been tasked today to let you go, the company has decided this action based on the following reasons....XXXX. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you [insert personal response]'.

I'd ask them to marry me first, so that when I fire them immediately after it'll only be the second worst thing that happened to them that day

I'll explain to them what the reasoning for that is, and if I feel like it's an unjust layoff I'll help with any way I reasonably can.
