[Copied from Quora] What has your country done that you are ashamed of?

I mean, the only things it's done I'm NOT embarrassed it did with a knife to its throat, so it doesn't look good.

Expect you to join the military and die for what is basically an oil company that doesn't give a single HOOT about you

This year? Refused to waive patents for COVID vaccines so poor countries could replicate them, bombed Syria, kicked at least one family off their land to continue building Trump's wall...

I'm not ashamed of anything other people do or did in the past that I have no control over in the country I happened to be born in. That wouldn't make any sense.

It’s our fault concentration camps exist. We had a huge part to play in slave trade. We’re the cause of a famine which killed millions in India.
There’s soooo much more but I haven’t got all night.

Corruption, bullfighters and other traditions that involve enjoyment from animal suffering, Santa Inquisicion...

They wrote more than 1000 pages of history about it. It is a shame. But what I am ashamed of is that nobody seems to have learned from it. Neither in my country nor the former enemies who fought that shit we did. All of them plus we have in one form or other Neo-Nazis in not so miniscule numbers.

Red lining districts to keep neighborhoods segregated, which still goes on.. Incarcerating a quarter of the world's prison population, mostly for non-violent drug offenses. Turning away people fleeing the Holocaust. The child concentration camps at the border. The genocide of indigenous first nations people. Slavery.. I really wish I could name just one.
