How do you console/cheer up a friend going through a rough breakup?

Depends on what they need, everyone's different. Some people wanna talk about it, some don't. Some people wanna be with you so they don't have to be alone, some ppl wanna process in solitude

Ask them to marry me

Then they're like, "good point, things could be worse, we could be married"

I'm trying to figure that out too, there's a love triangle among my friends - two are in a relationship that is in big big trouble and I'm expecting the 'we broke up' text literally any second plus one of them is having an affair with the third and I kind of have a separate relationship with all of them, mostly I've been staying out of it but sometimes they want to talk and really I think listening is what they want/need more than anything, not necessarily solutions or profound wisdom or whatever

I’m just there. If they want to talk that’s fine. If they’d rather just be and have me accompany them. I let them take the lead.

Meh. Just show them a good time to distract them. I remember an x friend who broke up with her bf and was depressed. I dedicated myself to distracting her by doing things that were way out of my comfort zone. For a whole month… Then she got back together with him 🤦‍♀️

I have tried a couple of times. I found that being a good empathic friend and ready to listen and ready for physical comfort and tender hugs is a method that provides a safe space where sadness and rage and misery can play and find some relief by it.
