What is a red flag for you when looking at writing characters?
Hmmm I guess the same everyone else said, making an OC too perfect and stuff. Even when I have an OC who's a prodigy in some field, I give them enough things to counterbalance that fact LOL
I also wouldn't say this is a red flag and I don't mind if people like doing this, it's just something I personally avoid (I think) but I don't do well with basing an OC's personality off a single trope in terms of personality. Idk, it's just something that's not my thing LOL I like to spice things up in some ways. Which I mean, I do use tropes for inspiration sometimes but I don't limit them to that trope, sometimes I like to go beyond the limit and even explore things that might seem contrasting to the trope but just like real people aren't limited to single personality traits, I like my OCs to also have that depth LOL
OP characters which is currently one of my biggest fears
One of my characters, Fausto, is a trainer who’s been traveling region to region battling gym leaders and so of course I want to write him winning but I don’t wanna write it in a way that makes him seem unbeatable but definitely someone people will have a struggle with! Although I do think some OP characters can be written very nicely if done right!
Don't make them too similar to any existing character nor a perfect being. Nor being too exagerrated in any positive trait to parody levels unless it's ironic.
I’m super OCD about using the same hair and eye colors with my OCs. Not that I won’t do it because i definitely do but I try to avoid it if I can and it sometimes bothers me when I do.
For me it's making a character too obvious. Like stereotypes are fun to play with, but I don't wanna make a character be just their stereotype, even when they lean hard into a trope.
Evil looking mad scientist? Make him a pacifist.
Yeehaw cowboy who carries 2 guns with him everywhere? He's an environmentalist protecting endangered pokemon.
Punk rock musician? She's a pretty cheery, kind and polite person.
The honorable tribal warrior? Well he's only like that at his gym and a ball of anger everywhere else.
Sort of an extended version to the twitter version!
I don't usually like making OCs extremely or absurdly talented at any one thing they haven't dedicated their entire life to. If I do theres usually a character flaw that's actually meaningful to compensate. For example, while June is technically the top ranked gym leader and a talented contest star, she is incredibly insufferable and routinely nerfs her own opportunities thru her own blind negligence and ignorance
Try not to make their personalities the same or similar to another
Like when I make an OC, I want them to be unique, not just in design, but in personality too. Because if I make a Rival or Travel companion, I accidentally make them close to my OC's chaotic personality and Then I have to start over from scratch to make sure each character is unique and different, but corresponds well to my other OC's personalities
